  1. James 4:7-11 • Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. • Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.

  2. Biblical Examples Of Self Deception And How To Overcome It

  3. How We Enter The Box We deceive ourselves when we refuse to do what we believe we should do? 1. The behavior of others have nothing to do with our decisions. 2. When we don’t do what we think we should do “enter the box” we deceive ourselves.

  4. In The Box We Do Two Things • First: Others Begin To Look Bad To Us a. We begin to judge others very harshly. b. We assign motives and actions to them that are not favorable. Second: We Begin To See Ourselves As Good a. We are right in what we did or didn’t do. b. We are the victim of the bad behavior of this other person.

  5. Cain – Genesis 4:1-13 • Cain brought an offering to God • Cain brought the wrong thing • God rejected Cain and his offering • Cain became angry • Cain rejected God’s offer • Cain murdered his brother • Cain asked “am I my brother’s keeper?” • Cain complained his punishment was too great. • Cain is self deceived about who is the problem? • For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous • (1 John 3:11-12).

  6. Ahab – 1 Kings 16:30-33 •  Ahab did evil in the sight of the Lord • Ahab walked in the sins of the Jeroboam • Ahab married Jezebel • Ahab made an altar and worshipped Baal • Ahab did more to provoke the Lord than all before him. • When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "Is it you, you troubler of Israel? “And he answered, "I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father's house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the LORD and followed the Baals (1 Kings 18:17-18).

  7. King Saul – 1 Samuel 15:1-3; 9 • Saul was charged with destroying everything. • Saul refused to destroy everything • Saul said he obeyed the voice of the Lord • Saul said the people kept the best things. • And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, "Blessed be you to the LORD. I have performed the commandment of the LORD." And Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?”(1 Samuel 15:13-14) see also 15:22-24

  8. A Very Religious Man Luke 18:10-13 • He was an extortioner, adulterer, unjust • He fasted twice a week and gave tithes and prayed • He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt (v 9) • I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." (v 14)

  9. How Do We Avoid Deceiving Ourselves?

  10. When We Stop Resisting Others • All humans have inherit worth (Gen 1:26-27) • Treat others the way we want to be treated (Matt 7:12) • Prefer others before ourselves (Rom 12:9-10) • Put down our pride (James 4:6-10) • Examine ourselves (2 Cor 13:5) • Stop excusing ourselves while accusing others. • Hold ourselves to the same standards we hold others (Romans 2:1-2; 20)

  11. Do What Christ Demands • Do what we promised to do (Psalm 15:4) • Do what Christ told us to do (1 Cor 11:3) • Elders • Deacons • Preachers • Members • Everyone • Do what we do “as to the Lord” (Col. 3:23)

  12. Admit Our Need For God • Every sin is against God (Psalm 51:4) • No one is without sin (Rom 3:9; 23) • No one is so good they don’t need God • No one can justify himself (Prov 20:9) • No one knows his way (Jer 10:23) • Everyone needs grace and mercy therefore everyone must give it (Matt 6:14-15; Ephesians 4:32)
