EQUIP project is: funded by Life Long Learning Programme, Leonardo da Vinci (Development of Innovations, centralised project) coordinated by Turku University of Applied Sciences, Finland a partnership of several universities and vocational educators in Finland, Estonia, Danmark, the Netherlands, UK and Spain 30.10.2008 EQUIP-projekti Sivu 2 www.turkuamk.fi

  3. Why EQUIP- project? The amount of old people is incrasing in Europe. Most people want to live at home as long as possible. To enable it, home care services are vital. In many countries there is a lack of home care workers. EQUIP project aims at: enhancing mobility of care workers enhancing quantity and quality of home care workers and disseminating good home care practices Electronic tool (e-questionnaire) for individual workers to assess how their qualifications meet the requirements of another country outcome outcome Database of education and training of home care workers in different countries 30.10.2008 EQUIP-projekti Sivu 4 www.turkuamk.fi

  9. An example: a draft of Finnish questionnaire: 1. Do you have any education of care? NO - > “Move directly to question X”. YES -> 2.  Which level of education (ISCED / EQF)? -> if higher education, “you are over-educated. You can take part in competence-based test in Finland if it seems to you that you have knowledge, skills and competences that are needed in Finland in order to work as a practical nurse in home care (see questions x….)” -> if ISCED level 3 / EQF 3-4 “please answer the questions x…. to know how well your knowledge, skills and competences fit to Finnish demands”. 30.10.2008 EQUIP-projekti Sivu 9 www.turkuamk.fi

  10. 3. How many years of education / how many ecvet credits / study weeks? 4. How much practical training? In Finland at least 29 study weeks is required. 5. Do you have work experience in home care? NO, only education - > see answers a, b, c. Domestic and personal care: • DO YOU HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE OF: • - how to determine elderly people’s needs for care and take their habits and routines into account? • - Skin and sexuality changes with age? • - Nutritional state?............................ • DO YOU HAVE SKILLS OF / ARE YOU ABLE TO: • - Guide in skin, oral and dental care, provide foot care? • - Guide in and evaluate independent daily activities and household management? • Prepare food and set it out in accordance with elderly people’s needs, considering aesthetic aspects?............. • DO YOU HAVE THE COMPETENCE OF: • Working in accordance with the existing plans and agreements? • Providing people of different ages and backgrounds with basic care independently at clients’ homes?.............. 30.10.2008 EQUIP-projekti Sivu 11 www.turkuamk.fi

Nursing and health care • DO YOU HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE OF: • - The most common diseases in Finland? • - Drug groups? • - Side effects of the most common pharmaceutical • preparations? • - The rights of patients in cases of injury?......... • DO YOU HAVE THE SKILLS OF/ ARE YOU ABLE TO: • - Maintain the basic vital functions of clients? • - Attend to the basic care of sick clients and carry out their daily dental and foot care? • - Dose and administer drugs in accordance with instructions?................ • DO YOU HAVE THE COMPETENCE OF: • - Evaluate the applicability of the essential nursing methods for elderly people and develop these further? • ................................ 30.10.2008 EQUIP-projekti Sivu 12 www.turkuamk.fi

  13.  ”If your qualification fits well to Finnish demands, there are several opportunities how to proceed: a. ->“Contact The Finnish National Board of Education (www.oph.fi/.....) and fill in an application form. The Finnish National Board of Education (NBE) recognizes the eligibility that foreign qualifications give for civil service posts and positions in Finland... a.-> If you wish to work in home care provied by municipal health care, contact TEO (The National Authority for Medicolegal Affairs, www.teo.fi). It grants the right to practise, approves training and registers healthcare professionals by application. Practical nurse is a protected occupational title in Finland... c. -> Private employers may decide themselves what kind of qualifications they require.
