  1. Measurement

  2. History of Measurement

  3. The English developed their own loose system of measurement based on common items and tradition: inch - width of thumb foot - length of foot yard - tip of nose to end of middle finger or the sash around a person’s waist This system became known as the imperial system of measurement.

  4. As societies evolved, each one invented its own numbering and measuring system for trade, taxation, and land measurement. As the world became smaller and international trade increased, the need for a standard worldwide system of measurement became obvious. Efforts toward making an international system of measurement began in the 1790s.

  5. International System of Units is a network that links all systems of weights and measures, metric and non-metric maintained by small agency in Paris called the SI, using the French name System International.

  6. Why do we use the SI measurement system in science? Well…Let’s compare the Imperial system of measurement and the SI system of measurement?

  7. First let’s look at the imperial system.

  8. How many inches in a foot? 12 How many feet in a yard? 3 How many yards in a mile? 1,760 How many feet in a mile? 5, 280 How many Tbsp in a cup? 16 How many cups in a pint? 2 How many pints in a quart? 2 How many quarts in a gallon? 4

  9. How many ounces in a pound? 16 How many pounds in a ton? 2,000 What is temp freezing? 32˚ F What temp is boiling? 212˚ F

  10. Now let’s look at the SI system.

  11. How many mm in one cm? 10 How many cm in one dm? 10 How many dm in one m? 10 How many mL in one cL? 10 How many cL in one dL? 10 How many dL in one L? 10 How many mg in one cg? 10 How many cg in one dg? 10

  12. 10 How many dg in one g? 0˚C What temp is freezing? 100˚C How temp is boiling?

  13. Which system makes more sense?

  14. The SI system is a system of...

  19. C Temperature Measurement • V. Temperature • Temperatureis a quantitative measure of how much heat is inan object. • B. Temperature is measured in degreesCelsius. • C. Temperature is measured using athermometer.
