  5. What you need to do to be successful in this portfolio unit! You will need to focus on services that are from one sector in the local community. All of your investigation within the unit will relate to the one sector you have chosen, to include: • The range of care needs of major client groups and why they may need the services. • The ways people can obtain services in the sector chosen and the possible barriers that could prevent people from gaining access to the services. • The different types of services in the sector that exist to meet different needs of individuals and how they are developed and organized. • The principles of care that underpin all care work with clients. • The main work roles and skills of people who provide health, social care and early years services.

  6. What you need to do next! You must also present your work in an appropriate format using evidence that is relevant to the investigation you have decided to carry out. You must include: A plan or checklist • An evaluation: • aim • objectives • effectiveness • conclusions Improvements that could be made A bibliography

  7. Start your plan! You will need to start a plan for the investigation of the sector you have chosen. You will need to follow this plan after the teaching has been completed and before starting the controlled assignment. You should include: • The dates when you propose to investigate and write up the information • The actions you propose to take • The reasons for the actions to be taken

  8. Drawing up the plan you intend to use for your investigation. This is an example – the statements you make will be greater and the plan will be quite extensive.

  9. Services in the local community provide the needs of individuals. Dentists Health Care Hospitals GP Surgeries Day-care centres Private and local Authority Health Centres Nursery classes Nursery schools Social Care for older people Early Years Provision Residential homes Private homes Playgroups Crèches

  10. Task 1 Working in your groups (remember each person has a job to do over the coming weeks, you will be graded on the input each person contributes to each task) put your name next to each task you do. • Write down three services that you or your family have used , produce a table with three columns headed: • Health care • Social care • Early years Place the services that each of you have used under the correct heading. Why did you use the service? AfL – now compare your table with another group, are they similar or different? Lesson objective – to understand the next coursework unit of your H&SC course

  11. Task 2 • In your groups , discuss how an individual with a health need might feel it they were prevented from using the services they needed because of lack of money or being unable to reach it. • AfL – discuss the outcomes as a group Lesson objective – to understand all about the next coursework unit of your H&SC course

  12. Task 3 – Homework • Linking this into PIES • How did the professional care workers apply the care values in the services you used? • How did this make you feel? It is quality of service that we receive when we are in need of health and social care that will influence how we rate the services. • How well did the services meet your needs? make some notes then discuss this with the rest of the group during next lesson. Lesson objective – to understand all about the next coursework unit of your H&SC course

  13. Next time – remember everything you do now will be used to help you as an individual during the planning controlled assessment • Start to work on your research and planning How will you do this? First - you need to decide on the area of services you intend to study. Secondly – you need to remember to complete your study in the local community How can I do this? Using the glossary of local services on the next slide or using a service you know of, begin to start thinking about how you could collect primary research. You will write this up in a large mind map. Mind map – what do you need to plan and think about?
