The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 now categorically qualifies foster children for free meals, eliminating the need for a household application. By Spring 2011, updated school meal eligibility guidance, including the handling of Social Security numbers, will be in effect. Local Education Agencies (LEAs) can promote healthier eating by encouraging fruit and vegetable consumption, limiting starchy options, and increasing whole grain provisions while reducing sodium. Compliance with new nutrition requirements, including milk standards, is crucial for successful implementation and enhancing student wellness.
