  1. A Living Hope

  2. A Living Hope 1Pt1:3-5 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.”

  3. A Living Hope 1Pt1:6-9 “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief of all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an expressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

  4. A Living Hope 1 Peter was written to encourage beleaguered Christians in Asia Minor who were: - being abused by overbearing bosses – 2:18 • Threatened by unbelieving spouses – 3:1,6 • Ridiculed by sceptical neighbours – 4:14 • Possibility of more persecution – 4:12-18

  5. A Living Hope Hope: • Today = “desire for something which we are uncertain of attaining” • Peter & NT = a full assurance; a certainty; a dynamic confidence that God is going to do good to us now & in the future.

  6. A Living Hope “a strong confidence in God who has power to produce changes in how we live.”

  7. Certain Hope • We are given assurance that we will not be alone; Matt 28:20b; John 14:16 • We need not fear death. Why? - “Surely I am with you always to the very end of the age” Matt28:20b - “Death has been swallowed up in victory” 1Cor 15:54

  8. Certain Hope • We are promised a greater ability to function in life • Jesus is the answer to: - all our shattered hopes & dreams; - pressures we feel daily; - our sense of failure. No wonder the early Christians were full of joy, optimism & expectation

  9. Summary Promises • Promise of his companionship • Promise of an absence of fear • Promise of a greater ability to live life to the full JESUS IS ALIVE !!!!
