  1. A Glass of Wine Can Influence Your Tasting Experience If you're just starting out in the world of wine, for sure you've seen yourself in front of a shelf with several glasses and thought: "why are there so many different ones?" For the beginner, buying a wine glass is as complicated as choosing wine. So, the first step is to understand why there are so many different shaped glasses. After many studies, the containers were developed to carry the wine to the mouth and nose in order to enhance the colors, aromas and wine flavors, which influences the result. A minimally sharp palate will feel the difference when drinking the same wine in completely different glasses.

  2. The first tip is to have a glass called ISO (International Standards Organization): a glass developed for technical tastings and that is suitable for any wine. It is also common to advise that you have four basic models: one for white wines and rose wines, two for different types of reds (Bordeaux and Burgundy) and one for sparkling wines. The glasses basically exist in three options: crystal, glass crystal or glass. The difference between them is the presence and the content of lead, a metal used in its production. The crystal one has up to 24% lead, the glass crystal comes with about 10% and the glass does not. Lead gives more lightness, delicacy and sonority, in addition to making the thickness of the bowl thinner. Crystal bowls are also more porous. This factor is also positive, because when we spin a wine while tasting it, we force the molecules against the rough wall, breaking them and, thus, obtaining a great concentration of aromas.

  3. Red wine needs space to breathe, as it has very intense aromas and flavors. For this reason, the cup has a large body, making it unleash all its power. Bordeaux glasses were made to house more full-bodied and tannin-rich wines. They have a large bulge but have a more closed edge to prevent the dispersion of aromas, concentrating them. It is indicated for wine grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, for example.

  4. Burgundy wines are more complex and concentrated. Therefore, the glasses are balloon-shaped (that is, with a larger bowl than Bordeaux) so that there is more contact with the air, which allows the bouquet to be released more quickly. It is indicated for wine grapes like Pinot Noir. For white wines (and can also be used for rose wines), the glasses have a smaller body than those for red wine, because white wine needs to be consumed at lower temperatures and, therefore, in a smaller container, allowing less heat exchanges with the environment. Also, it needs fruit notes to be highlighted.

  5. For Champagne or an ordinary sparkling wine, the appropriate glass is what we call a flute. So that bubbles can be appreciated. The thin cup also directs effervescence and aromas to the nose, while controlling the flow above the tongue, maintaining the balance between cleansing acidity and tasty depth.
