AVID Senior Year at-a-Glance • College Applications (including college admission essays/personal statements) • Financial Aid Applications (FAFSA, scholarships, Dream Act, Cal Grant) • Evaluate admissions and financial aid offers • Continue development of students’ reading, writing and critical thinking skills

  4. UCs & ACT/SAT • Self-report scores on admissions application • Deadlines for official test scores are due by December 31, 2013 • When ACT/College Board sends official score reports to one UC campus, all campuses apply to will receive

UC Educational Opportunity Program(EOP) • Provides admission and academic assistance to first-generation college students or students demonstrating a history of being from a low-income background • In many cases, the program offers financial assistance to eligible students • When completing admission application, check “yes” for EOP • Complete family information section on parent education, language spoken in home and income • Complete FAFSA or Dream Act Application • Information included in personal statement also determines placement in EOP: student should mention if first in the family to pursue a higher education

  7. CSUs & ACT/SAT • Self-report scores on admissions application • Deadlines for official test scores (from ACT/College Board) vary by campus; best to take no later than November • For SAT, can list CSUMentor as a score recipient by using code 3594 – will send scores to all CSU campuses

  8. CSU Educational Opportunity Program(EOP) • Similar to UC Educational Opportunity Program • When completing admission application, check “yes” for EOP • Complete FAFSA or Dream Act Application • Additional application required • Application deadlines vary by campus

  11. Information Needed for Applications • Social Security #: if applicable. Students who have received Social Security #s through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) should not use the numbers. • Family income & size: 2012 family income and 2013 estimated family income, plus the number of people in the household (parents & dependents), are required of students applying for application fee waivers and the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). • California residency information: to establish California residency, students will need to supply the month/year they and their parents arrived in California if they have ever lived outside of California. • Citizenship status information: students must enter a country of citizenship (or “none”). If country of citizenship is outside the United States, they will need to provide immigration status and visa type/date issued. • College appropriate email

Cost of Applying to a 4-Year University • UC Application costs $70 per campus, unless have fee waivers (Nov) • CSU Application costs $55 per campus, unless have fee waivers (Nov) • $100 Intent to Register Fee for campus attending (May 1, 2014) • $200-$500 for Student Orientation cost (May) • Up to $500 Housing Deposit (April-June) Some fees may be waived by Pell Grant eligibility

  13. Cost of Attendance Cost of attendance includes tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies, transportation and personal expenses.

  14. College Can Be Affordable! FIRST students must: • Apply for admission by end of November THEN: • File FAFSA or Dream Act Application between January 1 and March 2, 2014 • Immediately provide documentation to financial aid office as requested • Expect to borrow and work part-time

  16. Free Application for Financial Aid(FAFSA) http://www.fafsa.ed.gov (Not .com!) • When completed, student is considered for federal grants, loans and work study • Must be submitted no earlier than January 1, 2014 & no later than March 1, 2014

  17. Get a Jump Start on the FAFSA • Visit www.pin.edu.gov so that student and parent/guardian each get a pin number. Make sure to keep pin in a safe place! • View practice worksheets at: http://fafsa4caster.ed.gov • Gather: Social Security numbers, financial records (W-2s from last year and eventually, from this year), email addresses, driver’s license numbers, and Alien Registration numbers (if not a citizen)

Financial Aid for Undocumented Students California Dream Act: • AB 540: Undocumented students who have been in a CA high school for more than 3 years and/or graduated from a CA high school are eligible for in-state tuition fees • AB 130: Allows AB 540 students to be eligible for private institutional scholarships beginning January 1, 2013 • AB 131: AB 540 students will be eligible for CA state aid: Cal Grants, EOP, beginning January 1, 2013 • Complete California Dream Act Application no earlier than January 1, 2014 and no later than March 2, 2014 http://www.csac.ca.gov/dream_act.asp

College Information & Application Assistance • SLHS College and Career Night • October 14th, 2013 • Over 50 colleges, universities & vocational schools will be attending • Sonoma State University/Dominican University Field Trip • October 24, 2013 • FREE! • Application Assistance in the CCPC • October 21 – 25: CSUs • October 28 – November 1: UCs • November 4 – 8: Out-of-state and private colleges/universities • November 18 – 22: CCPC extended after school hours
