  3. Soical Impact • In 2008, 96 billion pounds of food was wasted every year. • In 2008, 39.8 million Americans experience food insecurity . • (the number is actually more…) 25% of the wasted food’s scraps Can feed 20 Million Americans who suffer from food insecurity

  4. Economical Impact • America spends about $ 1 billion dollar per year disposing of excess food.

  5. Environmental Impact • Greenhouse Gas: methane--20 times more harmful to the environment, if not properly managed, than carbon dioxide. • Food waste in America now accounts for more than one quarter of the total freshwater consumption.

  6. Causes • Supermarket: Rather throw away than donate. • Restaurants: 90,000 restaurants and eateries do not participate in food donation programs. • Individuals: Over purchasing; ignorance of food production cost.
