Jews believe that a savior known as the Messiah would restore the kingdom of the Jews. • 6-4 BC- Jesus of Nazareth is born in Bethlehem. • Age 30- Jesus begins public ministry. Preaches and teaches for 3 years. • Jesus’ message appeals especially to the poor (he ignores wealth and status completely)
RISE OF CHRISTIANITY • As Jesus increases in popularity, he angers the Jewish high court (Sanhedrin). AD 29- Jesus enters Jerusalem and is greeted by many as the Messiah. • Jesus is arrested and eventually crucified. • According to the Gospels (main source of info about Jesus’ life), 3 days later Jesus is raised from the dead and appears to his apostles. Jesus is referred to as Jesus Christ because of the Greek word “christos” (savior). “Christian” was originally a derogatory term for followers of Jesus. • Christianity’s first followers are Jews. The Apostles, particularly Paul, are instrumental in spreading Christianity throughout the Roman Empire. Pax Romana helps. Why?

FALL OF ROME • Pax Romana ends with Marcus Aurelius • Economic problems- inflation, declining agriculture, attacks • decline of military strength- mercenaries etc. • Diocletian restores order (but at what price?). Diocletian divides the empire and eventually retires. This causes civil war. • Constantine takes over and moves the capital to Byzantium (Constantinople) • AD 370- attack of the Huns leads to Germanic invasion. • AD 444- Attila unites Huns and wreaks havoc on the empire
FALL OF ROME • last Roman emperor is a 14 year old named Romulus Augustulus; defeated by Germanic forces in 476. • Byzantine empire continues to flourish until 1453. • ***p. 174 in your text has a nice chart on the fall of the Roman Empire***
