  3. CS Austin Chapter Vision • Computer Society Chapter is a community comprised of a diverse group of industry professionals with a common interest in advancing computer science technologies. Mission Statement • The IEEE Computer Society Chapter seeks to be the organization of choice for computer science technologists in the Central Texas Area and to provide education and networking for those professionals. 2017 Chapter Objectives: • Theme: “Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Big Data/Analytics” • Hold monthly high quality technical meeting • Distinguished Lecturer/Speaker • Community Outreach Project – Science in a Box • Support in creating the right environment for EMBS chapter growth. • Feedback form • Website & Listserv & Social media • Chapter financial health

  9. 2016 Recap - “Science-In-A-Box” Initiative • Mission: “Science-In-A-Box” was inspired by session on “Mindfulness for Life” as ‘Out-of-the-box’ topic appreciated by the audience. • Initiated discussion with Round Rock Independent School Districts' Partners in Education (PIE) to reach out to students at an impressionable age (10-16ys) with Science-In-A-Box (SIAB) program. • 2016 Pilot Project Plan • Kick-off March 2016 • Complete kit purchase – April 2016 • Catalogue the kits for check-out – June 2016 • Roll out Science-In-A-Box program – Aug-Dec 2016 • Target end date of Dec 2016 • Final Report on the program to CS Jan 2017 • Pilot Project Cost $500 • $400 towards purchasing 10 kits. • $100 Administrative cost associated with launching the pilot program Recommendation: Approval of Project and Funding in January 2016

  10. 2017- Progress Report “Science-In-A-Box” Initiative • Spring 2016 - Kicked-off the project. • Summer 2016 - Finalized the kits. • Fall 2016 – Rolled out the Program and monitored the pilot • Jan 2017 – Report to CTS • Spring 2017 – Continue to monitor the usage pattern for these kits and gather feedback • Taking lessons learnt from the pilot and getting ready for • Roll this program to a mode ‘needy school’ • Planning a Workshop at UT Engineering School for High School Students

  14. “Science-In-A-Box” InitiativeReport • What went well • Picked the right person and right school to partner with. The teacher won the 2016 Texas Teacher of the Year award • Continued support and guidance from Leslie – CTS IEEE Chair • Continued support from Fawzi Behman of “out-of-the-box” ideas for the CS Chapter • Smooth execution and collaboration with the RRISD • Program mid-course adjustment – example, kits moved from Library to Innovation Center for easy access and adoption • Saw a lot of enthusiasm from the younger classes and their teachers, though this was targeted for the higher grade levels

  15. “Science-In-A-Box” InitiativeReport • Challenges • Had to work around the new celebrity 2016 Texas Teacher of the Year awardee commitments with travel etc • Schedule the kit usage so it won’t clash with STAR test preparation and testing • Needed a little bit more advertising • Harder to create a lesson plan using the kits as they are bound by state mandated curriculum • Need to go through the RRISD process to get recognition for the IEEE initiative – in-progress
