Whatis BC’s MedicalServicesPlan(MSP)?

MSPisBritishColumbia’sprovincialhealthinsuranceprogram,managedbyHealthInsurance BritishColumbia,Canada.ItensuresthateligibleresidentsofBChaveaccesstoessentialmedical serviceswithoutpayingatthetimeoftreatment.TheMedicalServicesPlan(MSP) isfundedbythe governmentusingtaxrevenuesandotherpublicresources. AllresidentsofBC,includingCanadiancitizens,permanentresidents,andeligibletemporary residents,mustenrollinMSP.Awaitingperiodofup tothreemonthsfromyourdateofarrival usuallyapplies. WhoIsEligibleforMSP? ToqualifyforMSP,youmustbearesidentofBC.Thisincludes: CanadiancitizensorpermanentresidentslivinginBC. Individualsholdingavalidworkpermitthat is effectiveforsixmonthsorlonger. Internationalstudentswithastudypermitvalidforsixmonthsormore. Dependents,suchasspousesandchildren,livingwiththeapplicant. Note:Visitorsand touristsarenoteligibleforMSP.Theyshouldpurchaseprivatetravelinsurance forthedurationoftheirstay. What’sIncludedinMSPCoverage? Here’sabreakdownofthekeyservicestypicallycoveredunderMSP: 1.Visitstoa Family DoctororGeneralPractitioner(GP)

HospitalServices Including: Emergencycare Inpatientcare Surgeries Diagnostictests(e.g.,X-rays,bloodtests)doneatahospital MedicallyRequiredSpecialistServices Ifyourfamilydoctorrefersyoutoaspecialist(e.g.,cardiologist,dermatologist),MSP will cover it. MedicalTests andDiagnostics Bloodtests,imaging(e.g.,X-rays,ultrasounds),andlabworkorderedbyyourdoctorare covered. MaternityandPrenatalCare Prenatalcheckups,delivery,andpostnatalcarearecoveredifprovidedbyadoctorora registeredmidwife. .SurgicalServices Minorandmajorsurgeriesinhospitalsorapprovedoutpatientsurgicalcentersareincluded. 7.AnesthesiaandSurgicalAssistance Coveredwhenmedicallynecessaryduringaprocedure. .SomeDentalandOralSurgery(PerformedinHospitals) Whileregulardentalcareisnotcovered,surgeriesrequiringhospitalization—likejaworfacial bonesurgery—maybe. DoesMSPCoverPhysiotherapy? Yes,MSP(MedicalServicesPlan)maycoverphysiotherapy,butonlyfor eligible individuals throughitsSupplementary Benetsprogram.Coverageisnotavailabletoeveryoneandislimited bothinscopeandamount. Youmayqualifyforpartialcoverageifyoumeetanyofthefollowingcriteria: YoureceiveIncomeAssistance Youareasenior(65+) Youareaconventionrefugee YouareaninmateinaB.C.CorrectionalFacility YouareenrolledthroughtheAtHomeProgram Youarearesidentinalong-termcarefacilityreceivingtheGuaranteedIncomeSupplement (GIS) YouareenrolledasaMentalHealthClient

  4. Youare a FirstNationsmembercoveredunderBC’sMSPthroughtheFirstNationsHealth Authority. Youarealow-incomeresidentwithanadjustednetincomeunder$42,000,veriedannuallybyCRA(CanadaRevenueAgency) Ifyoudonotfallintothesecategories,youwillneedto payoutofpocketoruseaprivatehealth insuranceplanforphysiotherapy. Note:To qualify underthelow-income criteria, youmustleyourtaxeseveryyearandgive permissionforCRAtoshareyourincomedetailswithHealthInsuranceBC.Moreover,MSPmay providecoverageforupto10combinedvisits percalendaryearforserviceslikephysiotherapy, chiropracticcare,therapeuticmassagetherapy,acupuncture,andnaturopathy.(Important:These visitsmustbewithaproviderregisteredandapprovedtobillMSP.)
