  2. Where is Darfur? Darfur is a region in Sudan. An independent sultanate for several hundred years, it was incorporated into Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces. The region is divided into three federal states: West Darfur, South Darfur, and North Darfur which are coordinated by a Transitional Darfur Regional Authority. Due to the War in Darfur, the region has been in a state of humanitarian emergency since 2003. (wikipedia)

  3. What is Darfur like? Darfur covers an area of some 493,180 square kilometers (190,420 sq mi) — approximately the size of France. It is largely an arid plateau with the Marrah Mountains (Jebel Marra), a range of volcanic peaks rising up to 3,042 meters (9,980 ft) of topographic prominence in the center of the region. The region's main towns are Al Fashir, Nyala, and Geneina. (wikipedia)

History of Darfur • Darfur has always been an area of instability. • Gaining independence in 1956 from British rule. • Severe famine struck in the 1980s which led to many of the fighting amongst Darfuris.   5. Darfur Conflict In 2003, a conflict arose between two groups. • Side One: • Sudanese military • Janjaweed • Sudanese militia group recruited mostly from the Afro-Arab Abbala tribes of the northern Rizeigat region in Sudan. • These tribes are mainly camel-herding nomads

  6. Side Two: • composed of rebel groups • Sudan Liberation Movement/Army • Justice and Equality Movement, from the non-Arab Fur, Zaghawa, and Masalit ethnic groups.

Darfur is a western region of Sudan that has been plagued by violence since February, 2003 The Sudanese government, denys support of the Janjaweed, has been accused of providing financial assistance as well as participating in joint attacks on targeting civilians. http://www.darfurpictures.com/

  8. The Sudanese government and the Janjaweed, a militia group from northern Sudan, used a scorched earth policy, where they burn down everything after going through.

  9. Genocide Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group. www.wikipedia.com

  11. The Sudanese government denies the situation and refuses to provide protection or assistance to the affected people of Darfur. Global organizations have acknowledged the situation including the US Government. The UN still denies the involvement of the Sudanese government.
