  8. The Big Six • Eisenberg & Berkowitz (1988) • Instructional Design Model and Problem Solving Model • Based on elements of Bloom’s Taxonomy and Information Literacy Standards

  9. The Big Six • Task Definition • define the problem; identify needed info. • Information Seeking • determine range; evaluate & prioritize • Location & Access • physically locate sources; find information

  10. The Big Six (continued) • Use of Information • engage resources; extract information • Synthesis • organize information; present the information • Evaluation • product (effectiveness); process (efficiency)

  11. The Delta Principle • Level I: Original intended use of technology • Level II: New applications of technology • Level III: Application dependent on technology • Changes can be intended or unintended; positive or negative

  12. Limitations of Technology • Computers are well-suited to tasks that require manipulation of large amounts of data (p. 35). • Choosing computers implicitly means encouraging efficiency, progress, sensation, and data control.

  13. Limitations of Technology (continued) • Computers are poor at: • making judgments • distinguishing between truth and falsehood • identifying beauty • discovering meaning • generating independent ideas • Choosing computers diminishes these values

  14. Summary • There are a variety of applications for educational technology • Problem solving models assist teachers in choosing appropriate resources, and students in applying procedures to solve problems • There are both benefits and detriments to utilizing technology. These can be intended or unintended
