  2. Another Tortured Romantic • Loved to read and write • Expelled from Oxford University for publishing a pamphlet about atheism • That started a life-long estrangement from his father

  3. Love Life • At 19, he “rescued” 16-year-old Harriet Westbrook from her mean father. They eloped. • Abandoned her 3 years later to run away with 17-year-old Mary Godwin • Daughter of two most important radicals of the 1790s. • Mary and Percy took her sister, Claire, with them. She had a brief affair with Lord Byron, starting a long friendship between him and Shelley • Harriet drowns herself in a pond. • Shelley can now marry Mary, but he never gains custody of his children with Harriet

  4. Tragic Death • Died in a boating accident before he was 30 • Two weeks later, his body washed ashore • It was burned in a funeral pyre on the beach • It is rumored that Italian sailors tried to save him but he refused.

  5. “Ozymandias” • Sonnet • 14 lines • Usually iambic pantameter • Has a specific rhyme scheme • This poem was written because of a friendly and informal poetry competition. • The British Museum of London was displaying some Egyptian artificacts
