Geography • Stands on top of a rocky hill. • The hill has a great view to the valley below, which is full of olive trees. • Other plants around Delphi include pine trees, plane trees and other trees that grow in the high mountains surrounding Delphi. • The geography of Delphi matches perfectly with its historical background. • Large, sandy coastline

Stable Food Source • Vegetables- Arugula, Asparagus, Artichokes, Bulbs, Cabbage, Cardoons, Carrots, Cos lettuce, Cress, Cucumbers, Fennel, Garlic, Leeks, Squash, Radishes, Turnips, Wild celery • Fruits- Apples, Bergamot oranges, Carobs, Figs, grapes, Jujubes, Olives, Pears, Plums, Pomegranates, Quinces • Legumes- Beans, Chickpeas, Lentils, Peas • Fish- Anchovies, Boarfish, Crayfish, Cuttlefish, Eels, Mullet, Grouper, Octopus, Prawns, Rays, Sardines, Sea bass, Sprats, Squid, Tuna, Wrasse • Meat- Birds, Boar, Chicken, Deer, Donkey, Goat, Goose, Hare, Lamb, Pheasant, Pork • Herbs/Spices- Barley, Wheat, Coriander, Dill, Mint, Pepper, Oregano, Salt, Saffron, Thyme, • Other foods- Cheese, Eggs, Honey, Milk, Nuts, Olive oil, Snails, Vinegar, • Beverages- Beer, Honey mead, Wine

Government • Delphi was considered the center of the world. • People as well cities visited it in order to get answers and guidance for their future and destiny. • The site was first settled in Mycenaean times in the late Bronze Age (1500-1100 BCE). • Ruled by 12 aristocrats. • Delphi is now a major archaeological site with well-preserved ruins

Religion • The sanctuary of Delphi held many religious ceremonies and events. • Delphi was a revered and sacred spot to people all over Greece. • Delphi was dedicated to the god, Apollo. • Delphi was the most important shrine in Greece. • Delphi, held games to honor various gods of the Greek religion.

  6. Architecture • Temple of Apollo was destroyed 3 times, but is still standing today • Ancient Theater built in the 4th century and had plays, poetry readings, and musical events during the festivals that took place • Delphi Sanctuary held 20th century Delphi games

  7. The Arts The bronze statue represented a chariot with four horses. Its height is 1.8m. It was made for Apollo by Polyzalos, the tyrant of Gela, in 478 BC, after he won the chariot-race at the The Charioteer (Heniochos). What remains today What the statue looked like
