  2. Higher Level IB History of the Americas • 2 Year Course • Junior Year: United States, Canada, & Latin America Colonial through 1900 • 20th Century domestic topics: Great Depression, Civil Rights Movement

  3. Higher Level IB History of the Americas • Senior Year: Contemporary World History • Prescribed Subjects (all 3) • 20th Century Topics • Causes, practices, effects of war • The rise and rule of single-party states • The Cold War

  4. IB EXAM – May 2010 • Cumulative! • All essays – students must show depth and analysis

  5. IB Exam - Paper 1 • 1 hour • Document based question (usually 5 sources, some primary, some secondary) • Total of 4 questions • 20% of IB Score

  6. IB Exam - Paper 2 • 1½ Hours • Must Answer 2 separate questions • 30 questions to choose from, 5 from each topic • 25% of IB Score

  7. IB Exam - Paper 3 • 2 ½ hours • Students must answer three questions from 25 choices • Most questions centered in Junior Year of study • 35% of IB Score

  8. Internal Assessment • Completed senior year (practice Junior year) • Historical Investigation • 20% of IB Grade

  9. Internal Assessment • Historical Investigation Examples: • A historical topic or theme using written sources or a variety of sources • A historical topic based on fieldwork; museum, archaeological site, battlefields, churches, etc.

  10. Internal Assessment • Historical Investigation Examples: • A historical problem using documents • A local history project • A history project based on oral interviews • A historical investigation based on interpreting a novel, film, art, etc.

  11. Internal Assessment • Written account, 1500-2000 words including: • Outline plan of investigation • Summary of evidence • Evaluation of sources • An analysis • A conclusion

  12. Keys to Success • Read each assignment carefully • Keep up with the reading • Hand assignments in on time • Take tests and quizzes on time • Concentrate AND participate in class • Be organized – save notes, assignments, etc. • Ask Questions
