  2. A Real Need There is a large pool of mostly untappedtechnical expertise and humanresources in the philatelic community.This expertise begs to be directed tothe betterment of the hobby throughthe performance of rigorous, analyticalresearch in many areas that canbenefit from new technologies.

  3. Institute for Analytical PhilatelyOur Mission IAP is a PhilanthropicEducational Institution dedicated to applying analytical techniques to philatelic studies, studies intended to provide long term and wide ranging benefits to all aspects of philately.

  4. The Institute Offers • Access to experimental equipment • Training in research methodology • A team and network of multidisciplinary management and technical experts • Guidance in conceptualizing projects • Assistance in documenting results

  5. Achieving the Goal

  6. Ideas will come from: • Individual philatelists • Specialty groups • Reviews of other scientific work being performed around the world • YOU

  7. Collaboration Is Paramount

How to Apply • Anyone wanting to help solve one of the many open mysteries of philately may apply • IAP will help you layout your project and even help you write your proposal • If necessary, IAP will use its staff resources and extensive network to find others who may be able to help your project succeed

  9. Research Grants • Grants are made available from IAP to qualified philatelic scholars. • Grants may also be made on a cost-sharing basis in conjunction with similar awards from allied philatelic institutions. • Example: An applicant is awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the National Postal Museum. The research proposal is also approved for funding by the IAP. A matching grant of up to $2,000 may be made.

  10. Grant Requirements • No affiliation with an institute of higher learning is required • Applicant must have demonstrable ability to perform successful analytical research. Funding from an allied philatelic institution is a plus • Formal proposal submission to IAP • Evaluation and selection by IAP

  11. Examples of Applications • Physical Sciences • Chemical Sciences • Optical Sciences • Mathematical and Computer Sciences • Printing and Paper Sciences “Social Sciences” will not fall within the IAP purview

  13. Why Strategic Alliances • To allow: • Access to established libraries and archives • Access to staff “experts” • Access to experimental hardware • To: • Reduce technical risk • Share and disseminate results • Reduce overhead, by eliminating “Bricks and Mortar,” Salaries and other costs

Why Centers of Excellence • To provide: • Access to state-of-the-art forensic equipment • Access to faculty specialists • Access to graduate students for possible support • Which helps IAP: • Eliminate cost of equipment purchase and maintenance • Stay current in a rapidly changing hardware environment
