In such regions, the tendency is toward more cost-effective designs. Cross-braces are avoided since their applications are not feasible in non-hazard zones. In Chicago or so-called ‘Windy City’, high-rise buildings are designed to withstand gusty winds. Reinforcing a structure with cross-braces are very efficient in preventing damages caused by winds. In San Diego, California, where destructive earthquakes are occurring often, seismic design of structures is a must. As a precaution against earthquakes, cross-braces can increase building’s capacity to withstand seismic forces.
