What is Scholars’ Week (SW)? • Unique 1 week opportunities not available during clinical rotations, and directed toward specific interests or career goals • 2 out of 3 weeks are required for graduation • Electronic scheduling - SWISH(Scholar’s Week Institutional Scheduling Helper) • Offered: • WK 44 (April/May) to MS III & IVs • WK 5 (July) MS IV only

  3. Scholars’ Week Catalog • SW catalog – update available at http://www.uab.edu/uasom/mss/catalog/schweek.htm • Some courses offered with an Honors option - • “Honors” is reflected on the transcript course name not in the grade • All courses are graded Pass/Fail

  4. SW Courses • Requirements are similar to 3rd & 4th year rotations • Defined structured activities • Sponsors are UASOM faculty • Honors – has a higher level of expectation with either a completed paper or other product required

Student Designed Courses • Submission deadlines: • WK 5 (7/26-8/1/04) – June 11, 2004WK 44 (4/25-5/1/04) – December 3, 2004 • Templateobtained from Dr. Bill Weaver bweaver@uab.edu 934-2792 • Sponsormust be UASOM Faculty • Submitto Dr. Weaver • Approvalis by the Integrated Medical Science Subcommittee (IMS) • Manual entryis made by the Academic Scheduling Coordinator upon receipt of approval

  6. SWISHScholar’s Week Institutional Scheduling Helperelectronic randomized scheduling program • Updated Catalog • Entry Begins: 9:00 AM Thursday May 13, 2004 • Entry Ends: 9:00 AM Thursday May 27, 2004 • Receive assignment: Tuesday June 1, 2004

SWISH Entry www.meis.uab.edu/students/swish/swish01.htmlink available from MSS News • Website available from any location but – • Must use Windows 98 or greater • Internet Explorer 5.0 or later • DO NOT use MACINTOSH • Enter computer lab user name & password • If prompted for Domain, enter uasom-volker.

  8. Remember about SWISH • Minimum 5 & maximum 15 entries • Courses have maximum and minimum limits, for many the maximum is 2 or 3 • At the bottom of entry screen is the course list – to select, click on button by course number / name continued -

  9. Remember about SWISH Continued – • Selected courses move to the top of the screen - a grid lists all selected courses in rank • ↑↓ arrows move course up or down in rank • Change your mind? Update selections until Thursday May 27,2004 @ 9:00 AM • Last selection will be randomized

  10. Confirmation of Entry • Click “Create Printable SWISH Confirmation” • This sends an email of selections to your BOSCO account & brings up a web page so you can print a list of your choices This is optional!

  11. Drop & Add • Extenuating circumstances only or no assignment • MS III students may drop an assignment, but cannot be reassigned for this time • must complete requirement during senior year Wks 5 & 44 • Cannot be dropped if minimum enrollment is affected, as this causes undue hardship on others • MSIV students may drop & add if limits allow • Change must be 30 days in advance of the cours
