Underlying Issues • Need for an anti-corrosion culture – corrosion should not be accepted as inevitable • Needs to be recognized as insidious and pervasive • Can be prevented or treated • Can be detected • Can be predicted • Need for corrosion education – 2009 National Academies of Science study identified • Knowledge gaps that limit ability to effectively address materials’ degradation • Nation-wide needs for equipment and infrastructure training and education. • Culture change depends on corrosion education
Formal EducationInitiatives • University of Akron • Undergraduate Degree in Corrosion Engineering – first in the western hemisphere • Focused on materials degradation science and technology • Includes development of corrosion management skills • Provides cooperative education with industry • National Center for Corrosion Education and Research • Exchange program with Curtin University • Participant in the Technical Corrosion Collaboration • Corrosion education exchange programs with Curtin University (Australia) and Aalen University (Germany) • Corrosion Courses • Basic corrosion course at Defense Acquisition University • College-level corrosion engineering and management - 15 corrosion modules • Added college level corrosion engineering modules planned
