  2. What is an IEP? • A program that is individualized to meet a special education student’s unique needs. • Designed by the student’s school district and parents. • Annual meetings are designed to make sure students needs are met.

  3. General Steps • Child is identified as possibly needing special education services • Child is evaluated • Eligibility is decided • IEP meeting is scheduled and held • Services are provided • Progress is measured and reported to parents • IEP is reviewed • Child is reevaluated

  4. At the Meeting • Parents meet with the school district, therapist, teachers. • Discuss goals, needs, objectives. • Develop placement that is most appropriate.

  5. Considerations • Child’s strengths • Parent or guardian concerns/ideas • Results of an individual evaluation • Results of a state or district-wide test

  6. Contents of the IEP • MUST include certain information about the child • Also include the educational program designed for the student • **Important that the discussion is focused on what the child needs and how to HELP the child

  7. Placement • Some types: • Regular class • Special Education class • Special school • At home • Hospital • Institution • A setting deemed fit by the team • Can change as deemed necessary

  8. Modifications/Accommodations • Some ways to help if you have a student with an IEP: • Classroom • Assignment • Testing
