  1. Proposed Best Practice for Analysis, Interpretation, and Reporting of Existing Data to Promote Continuous Learning and Improvement Digital Learning Collaborative and Clinical Effectiveness Research Collaborative, National Academy of MedicineWednesday, May 22, 2019 Lucy A. Savitz, Ph.D., MBA Vice President, Health Research Kaiser Permanente Northwest Region Director, Center for Health Research

  2. Knowledge – the range of one’s information or understanding Addressing the need to know – real-world data & evidence syntheses obstacles Understanding the quality/constraints of the underlying data  shared learning Reporting embedded research results providing a home Evidence needed to inform, creating knowledge that impacts care.

  3. Mind the Gap How do we get from here to there? How do we get from here to there? How do we get from here to there? Guise JM, Savitz LA, Friedman CP. Mind the Gap: Putting Evidence into Practice in the Era of Learning Health Systems. Journal of general internal medicine. 2018 Dec 1;33(12):2237-9.

  4. AHRQ Learning Health Systems, ACTION Contract to AIR (Sarah Mossburg, PD) The AHRQ Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) Program wants to help LHSs use the evidence from its evidence reports to improve patient care. However, LHSs have identified several barriers – (1) length/volume of information as presented; (2) (lack of) timeliness of the evidence; (3) limited generalizability of findings due to the homogeneity of populations studied in RCTs; (4) the absence of efforts to tie the findings to required, national reporting (5) Growing number of retractions from individual studies – specifically, that evidence reports are not updated to reflect these. Inability for LHSs to contribute real-world evidence to reviews that may be several years old, and thus, potentially outdated and no longer relevant.

  5. Journal’s Two Special Issues Highlight Use of Data in LHS Research High Value Healthcare Collaborative The problems & potential of big data to overcome delivery system challenges Published in eGEMs in December 2017 Editor: Lucy Savitz academyhealth.org/egems/HVHC Health Care Systems Research Network Shared scientific & data resources to improve health & health care. Published in eGEMs in March 2019 Editors: Sarah Greene & Andrew Nelson academyhealth.org/HCSRN

  6. New, Added AcademyHealth Journal Newly added section: Insights in analyzing health data.

  7. The Inaugural Special Issue for Implementation and Quality Improvement Sciences: A New JGIM Area of Emphasis • Types of articles can include those that: • test improvement interventions being spread beyond a single ward or clinic • assess the quality or utility of tools or toolkits • advance the utility of systematic review • assess the validity or reliability of new relevant methods • provide high level synthesis, perspectives or wisdom on major, innovative improvement efforts. • Papers due September 3, 2019
