  2. General Info • C470-450BC • Function Calyx Krater – mixing bowel • The Potter is unknown • Red Figure Vase • Named after a scene on one side of the vase, the killing of the Niobids

  3. Side A Warrior Athena? Herakles Perithoos? Theseus?

  4. Herakles- Stands in centre of frieze attracting the Viewers attention. Head in profile, body in frontal Theseus- Pulls himself up using the spears in his right hand. Pose is natural and balanced with his straight right arm and bent left leg. Head in profile and body in ¾ view Athena- Stands behind the warrior wearing an attic helmet and carrying a spear. She is in profile Side A

  5. Side A interpretation • There are different interpretations of this side as the figures are not named • One interpretation is the story of “The seven against Thebes” • Another possibility is “the Gathering of the Argonauts”

  6. Composition • The Frieze is framed by a pattern at the top and bottom and the different and dynamic poses of the different characters fills the space well • There is lots of Detail on the armour and the characters are well formed anatomically • There is little repetition • Many contrasts- Skin/drapery, lying down/standing up • The different positions and heights of the characters show depth in the Frieze

  8. Apollo- Again stands in centre of the Frieze. Legs open firing arrows. He is in profile Artemis- Also in the centre of the frieze. She is in the process of taking an arrow from her quiver. Wearing a peplos Side B

  9. Side B Interpretation • Again there a several different interpretations for this scene. • The most probable involves Apollo and Artemis’ murder of the Niobids

  10. Composition • Very dynamic poses from the two main characters in the process of firing arrows • The dying boy has his face in ¾ view with his eyes closed which is rarely seen • Varity of poses and positions • Both sides are very crowed but fill the space • Use of ground lines gives the impression of depth. However some of these have faded so some characters look like they are fading • Apollo is extremely detailed and has the most realism to him
