HOT ROC: Richard “Tricky Dick” Nixon • “The greatest honor history can bestow is the title of peacemaker.”—(1969) • “Isn't it better to talk about the relative merits of washing machines than the relative strength of rockets? Isn't this the kind of competition you want? These weapons will destroy us all.” (1959) • “I'm not for women, frankly, in any job. I don't want any of them around. They are erratic. And emotional. Thank God we don't have any in the Cabinet.” (1969) • “The Jews are an irreligious, atheistic, immoral bunch of bastards.You can't trust the bastards. They turn on you. Am I wrong or right? ” (1971) • “Well, when the President does it, that means that it is not illegal.” (1977)

Rise to the Presidency • Richard Nixon: President from 1969-1974 • Vice President to Eisenhower, lost Presidential election to JFK in 1960 • 1968 Campaign appeals to the “Silent Majority”: the average, middle class American • Promises stability and a return to law and order during a chaotic time • Wins election, but only 43% of the popular vote

Nixon’s Domestic Policy • New Federalism: attempt to appeal to both liberals and conservatives by reforming how Federal Government works • Revenue sharing: return tax revenues back to the States for them to use as they need • Popular with conservatives as gives states more power • Creates new government programs to please liberals • EPA: protect the environment • Family Assistance Plan: protect the poor by giving every family an annual income

  5. Nixon’s Economic Policy • Stagflation: stagnant economy + rapid price inflation • Unemployment rises AND prices increase • Nixon tries to fix economy with a three-phase program but unsuccessful

  6. Nixon’s Foreign Policy • Nixon Doctrine: “politics of reality” = U.S. cannot defend the entire free world • Détente: policy of relaxing tension with Communist nations • Historic visit to China in 1972 • Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT) with Russia to limit construction of nuclear weapons • Neither policy leads to lasting peace

Nixon’s Career Ends • Watergate Scandal: June 1972, 5 men break into Democratic National Committee on Nixon’s orders • Looking for information to help Nixon get reelected • 1973 scandal revealed by journalists • Nixon tries to cover up, but his secret recordings become public in 1974 • Reveals Nixon’s history of paranoia and use of frequent spying • August 1974 Nixon resigns Presidency

And in all of my years of public life, I have never obstructed justice. And I think, too, that I can say that in my years of public life, that I welcome this kind of examination because people have got to know whether or not their President is a crook.
