  3. Historical Background • First played by American Indians • Distinguished from similar sports by the netted racquets • Given it’s name by early French settlers • Both recreational and traditional in Indian cultures • One of the most rapid growing sports in the US

  4. Lacrosse Field Field Positions • Attack • Scores goals • Midfield • Covers entire field • Both offense & defense • Defense • Defend goal • Goal • Protect goal

Rules & Regulations • 12 players including goalie • Game begins with a “draw” • Checking – player knocks the ball from another players stick • Body checking is prohibited • Only goalie allowed in the area surrounding the goal • Whistle blown = foul • Personal Fouls • Slashing • Tripping • Illegal body checking • Technical Fouls • Holding • Interference • Stalling

  6. Throwing The 4 P’s • Pull • Pull stick back behind shoulder • Position • Opposite foot forward • Push • Push stick forward with upper hand & pull with lower hand • Point • Point head of stick to target & follow through

  7. Catching • Show Target • Have lacrosse stick face passer • Eye Contact • Maintain eye contact with passer • Movement • Move toward ball with stick vertical • Extend • Extend the lacrosse stick up & high with top hand extended • Absorb • Absorb impact

  8. Cradling • Dominant Hand • Grips below throat of stick • Non-Dominant Hand • Grips above bottom end of stick • Elbow In • Elbow in towards ribs • Wrist Curls • Curl wrist toward jaw

  9. Scooping • Outside Foot • Next to ball • Bend Knees • Bend knees at waist & lower butt • Knuckles • Knuckles scrape the ground • Pump Handle • Back hand pumps (i.e. shoveling) • Scoop Through • Quick scooping motion • Pocket to Face • Bring pocket to front of face
