  2. Mental Health refers to the current state of the mind, how a person is feeling about themselves and how they deal with situations in optimal mental health. • Low levels of stress • High levels of confidence • Positive thought patterns • Positive self esteem

  3. Mental health was declared a National Health Priority Area in 1996 because if its impact on the Australian community. • Reasons for Selection : • Most common non fatal burden of disease in Australia. • Significant number experience mental illness

  4. Burden of disease burden of disease and injury in Australia study indicated that mental disorder constitute the leading cause of disability burden in Australia, accounting for an estimated 24% of the total years lost due to disability.

  5. The Risk Factors Biological: Obesity- self confidence - low self esteem Genetic predisposition- people with mental illness in the family are more likely to develop mental illness at some stage in their lives.

  6. Risk Factors Behavioural: Tobacco use, smokers are more likely to have mental health problems. No evidence why youth experiencing mental health more likely to take up smoking.

  7. Risk Factors Social: Stress – stress increase risk of depression. • Early life experiences • Loss of parent, divorce may trigger mental illness. • Social exclusion
