  3. Evaporation • Changing of water from a liquid to a gas.

  4. Transpiration • Release of water into the air by plants

  5. Precipitation • Condensation of water (gas to liquid) – Rain/Snow

  6. Runoff • Water flowing over Earth’s surface

  7. Infiltration • Water permeating (entering) Earth’s surface

  8. Water Table • Boundary between water in the lithosphere and dry soil above.

  9. Things that Affect Infiltration(water entering the soil) • Porosity: • Amount of space (pores) between the sediments. • Greater the porosity, greater the infiltration

  10. Shape Round particles = greater porosity = greater permeability

  11. Packing Closely packed = lower porosity = low permeability

  12. Sorting Sorted = greater porosity = greater permeability

  13. Permeability Ability of water to pass through the soil

  14. Capillarity • Attraction that allows water to mover UP! • Greatest when sediment is SMALL!
