THE BASICS • Class meets two times a week • Dry Lab-PowerPoint, Models, Experiments • Wet Lab- Cadaver (Sometimes model and PowerPoint) • Additional content has been added this semester compared to the same class a year ago (thus, do not underestimate its difficulty based upon rumors from last year) • We will be studying much more physiology and diseases compared to last semester • Add, drop, change date is before 5:00pm Monday, January 30th • Office Hours will be held in Wet Lab Rooms at various times (All TA office hours will be emailed to you eventually)

CLASS ORGANIZATION • Materials required for class: • Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology, 9th edition by Martini & Nath • Martini's Atlas of the Human Body, 8th or 9th edition by Martini, Ober & Nath (Optional) • Physiology Lab Manual, Spring 2012 edition (OLD YEARS WILL NOT WORK) • Contains instructions for experiments • Anatomy Lab Manual, Spring 2012 edition (OLD YEARS WILL NOT WORK) • Contains List of Structures and PowerPoint's

  5. LABORATORY MANUAL • Are currently being printed • Information from this PowerPoint trumps what is said online and/or in your printed manual

  6. ATTENDANCE • Attendance is mandatory!! You receive points for attendance • You are allowed to miss 3 classes (and not lose points), but these must be reserved for emergency only. If you use these up for other reasons, and then miss a class for an emergency, you will lose the points for that class. • NO LAB SWITCHES (different from last semester) • If you know you will have a University Approved absence on an experiment or test day, you must contact Chester Brown at least 1 weeks before to arrange a different class or time to make this up • Extended absences require a note from the Office of the Dean of Students • Make up labs passed assigned weeks are assigned by Dr. Brown ONLY • Students who miss class are themselves responsible for learning the content missed (either on own, or during TA office hours) • If your are absent or plan on being absent from a practical or final exam you must contact Dr. Brown • Attendance points can be deducted accordingly by your TA depending on classroom conduct and tardiness

Tests • Three Tests This Semester • Everything on PowerPoint and structure lists are fair game • Tests will be done during class time and will last approximately 25 minutes long • If you fail or do very poorly on a test, you are strongly encouraged to set up a meeting with Chester and/or your TA to figure out a plan on how to pass the remaining tests • Tests will test both concepts of anatomy and physiology Make Up Tests • Make up tests are rarely granted and you must work this out with Chester (and provide extensive documentation) • Make up tests are administered during Finals Week and no additional time is given to you to review the content or cadavers • Less questions are given during make up tests, making them more risky (and more difficult in my opinion). • There is absolutely no advantage in taking a make up test and it is ill advised to do or try to do this

  8. ASSIGNMENTS • 4 Physiology Lab Exercises (Experiments) • Before each Physiology Lab Exerciseyou are expected to read the lab, however, this semester there will be no Pre-lab assignments. Your TA can take off participation points if they feel you have not adequately pre-read the assignments • Post lab assignment- due approx one week after lab is completed • 7 LON-CAPA assignments, lowest 2 are dropped • Make sure to check each week for assignments and due dates • You have one week after assignments and practical's are returned to contest or discuss grade changes

  9. PHYSIOLOGY LABS (EXPERIMENT DAYS) AND TEST DAYS

  10. GRADING NOTE, EVERY LON-CAPPA Assignment is worth about 40% of a test. Thus, it is critical that you turn all of these in and score high on these. This can help buffer poor test scores.

  11. GRADING • The class is not curved • Tests will not be curved unless some drastic low average exists (Last Semester, no tests were curved) • Partial Credit is not given on examinations • Spelling is important, but up to the discretion of your TA if they will give you the points or not (must be at least phonetically correct) • 1 point shy of an A will always get you a B+

  12. GENERAL RULES OF DRY LAB • In Dry Lab and Experiments • Be on time for class. Labs will start promptly at their assigned time and attendance is part of your grade. • Generally food and drink should not be consumed during class • Cell phones should not interrupt class • You can not sign the attendance sheet until the end of class (leaving early gives you no credit) • Do not point at models with pens or pencils (please use provided pip cleaners or fingers) • Use all safety precautions during experiments • No use of photography (or camera phones) on cadavers or models (doing this will result in a F for the class)

  13. GENERAL RULES OF WET LAB • Wet Lab • Be on time for class. Labs will start promptly at their assigned time and attendance is part of your grade. • No hats • No food or drink in lab including gum • Wear gloves when handling cadavers or when near cadaver area • Backpacks and Coats must be kept near entrance of room (not at table) • Wash your hands after using cadavers • Cadavers must be sprayed down every 10 to 15 minutes of exposure • Show RESPECT to the cadavers-No names or pictures • No use of photography (or camera phones) on cadavers or models (doing this will result in a F for the class) • If you are the last to use a cadaver, you must cover/spray it

  14. Role of the TA • The TA is not their as a personal teacher to teach you every fact and/or structure of anatomy and physiology • This is primarily a “self-taught” class. Students are expected to teach themselves anatomy and physiology. TA’s are their to assist you in this process of “self-teaching” • TA’s should be able to confirm your understanding and offer insights on how to learn difficult concepts and or structures • TA’s reserve the right to “get back to you by next class” if they themselves are unclear of a particular concept and/or structure • TA’s give priority to their own students during office hours, however others students can attend as well • NEVER, EVER ask a TA to do something like “Teach me everything I need to know on the heart model”. TA’s will turn it back on you and ask you what you have already figured out first, and then seek to confirm your understanding. • TA’s should not be distracted, complacent, aloof etc. • TA’s reserve the right to take away attendance point for mis-behavior, and/or leaving class early • Please direct compliments and or complaints about TA’s to the Chester Brown
