  4. Bilingual Education Bilingual education is when two languages are used to deliver curriculum content (Genesee 2004, cited in Banfi & Rettaroli 2008: 141) Main idea: children learn about the world while acquiring a second language

  5. Models • Total immersion • Partial immersion

  6. Total Immersion • Original model used to improve French amongst Canadian students in the 1960s • 100% instruction in second language • Children learn to read in this language first • Aims:enrichment,i.e. parents value bilingualism, and language maintenance

  7. Partial Immersion • Up to half the subjects are taught in the second language • Literacy is taught in both languages • Aims: normally enrichment, but also maintenance e.g. Footscray Primary School: Vietnamese–English program for maintenance of L1

  8. German-English: Bayswater South Primary School Foundation – Year 6 primary school Partial immersion program: with 30% instruction in German and 70% in English

Both languages: Maths English: theoretical , verbal component German: Applied component which is integrated with design, creativity and technology German only: Science (integrated with DCT) Art German literacy English only: English literacy ICT Music Health and Physical Education Subjects taught in each language

  10. French-English: Camberwell Primary School Camberwell is the first bilingual French school in Victoria. It is partial immersion Foundation – Year 6: 50% of instruction in French and 50% in English
