Interstitial Nephritis • Inflammation of the spaces between the tubules of the kidneys • Makes the kidneys not function properly, and waste is not filtered correctly • Can be acute or chronic • Acute is more common, and usually a side effect of certain medications • Chronic is more serious and is caused because of chronic medication use or kidney damage

  4. Interstitial Nephritis (cont) • Symptoms: • Decreased urine output • Fever • Drowsiness • Confusion • Nausea • Vomiting • Rash • Generalized body swelling • Weight gain

  5. Interstitial Nephritis (cont) • Treatment • Avoiding the cause of the swelling (the medicine) • Corticosteroids and Anti-inflammatory medicine can be used to reduce swelling quickly • Salt and fluid restricted diet

  6. Cystitis • Inflammation of the bladder • Caused mostly by a bacteria that enters through the urethra and moves up to the bladder • May also be caused by certain drugs, radiation, or chemical irritants • Symptoms • Strong urge to urinate • Burning during urination • Blood in the urine

  7. Cystitis (cont) • Symptoms (cont) • Urine with a strong odor • Discomfort and pressure in the abdomen and pelvis • Low fever • Treatment • Antibiotics (oral or injection into bladder) • For non-bacterial, treatment is on the underlying cause

  8. Urethritis • Inflammation of the lining of the urethra • Caused by bacterial infection that may also affect the bladder and reproductive organs • Symptoms • Not felt, in most cases • Burning and pain during urination • Pus or discharge from the penis or vagina • Burning and itching around the vaginal or penile opening

  9. Urethritis (cont) • Treatment • Series of antibiotics • Patients should not engage in sexual intercourse until symptoms are resolved and treatment stops

  10. Diabetes • There is glucose in the urine of untreated diabetic patients • Why? • In diabetes, glucose cannot be absorbed • This causes glucose levels to rise • The glucose is secreted into the urine along with water • Treatment will fix it
