  2. English Bellwork- Monday, October 2 • Directions: Write out ONE of the sentences. Then, create a rule about semicolons based on these sentences. • 1. My sister’s hair is red; mine is blond. • 2. My father’s ancestors came from Ireland; my mother’s ancestors were Swedish. • 3. Genes come in pairs; we have one pair of genes for each of our physical characteristics. • 4. One pair of genes determines the color of our hair; another pair determines the color of our eyes.

Everyone in our family is tall; my brother, for example, is six feet fall. • 2. Kim practiced repeatedly; therefore, she played well at the recital. • 3. She has worried about stage fright; in fact, she performed calmly. • 4. I play the guitar; however, I have never performed in public.

Matt grew healthy beans, lettuce, and peppers; but his tomatoes were a failure. • 2. In the South, summers are hot, dry, and long; and the climate is ideal for growing tomatoes. • 3. Atlanta has many art galleries, museums, and colleges; and its theater company is famous.

  6. English Bellwork- Thursday, October 5th • Directions: Write out EACH of the sentences. Then, insert semicolons where they are needed. • 1. The four island boroughs of New York City are Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island only the Bronx is on the mainland. • 2. Los Angeles is a national center of manufacturing, finance, and transportation its mass media industry in one of the largest in the world.

  7. English Bellwork- Friday, October 6th • Directions: Create a sentence using a comma to SHOW each of these three semicolon rules. • 1. Use a semicolon between the clauses of a compound sentence that are not joined by a coordinating conjunction. • 2. Use a semicolon to join clauses that are joined with conjunctive adverbs or transitional words. • 3. Use semicolons to avoid confusion with commas.
