  2. Sam Walton Early LIfe • Sam Walton was born on March 29, 1918. He was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. • Sam’s father was named Thomas, his mother Nancy, and he also had a younger brother named James. • Sam Walton attended the University of Missouri and he was voted "permanent president" of the class. • Walton joined the Zeta Phi chapter of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. • He also became a ROTC Cadet and He eventually reached the rank of captain.

Times in History • Sam was alive during World War Two. • This was a difficult time for many people, Sam had to quit one of his jobs because he thought he was going to be drafted into the war. • He eventually was drafted, and served until 1945. • He speaks of how this gave him time to think about what he wanted to do with his life after the war, and how it changed him in many ways.

Sam Walton’s Choices • Sam made a smart choice while he was in the military, he saved up $5,000 dollars, which he put towards opening a store when he was released. • Sam’s stores also stayed open later than most other stores around him in order to have a larger time period to make profit. • Sam hired workers who were willing to work for longer periods of time, he interviewed many times and thought that employees were a major key to success. • Sam was smart because he chose locations that were known to be the busiest. This meant higher prices, but he thought that it would pay off in the end, and it always did.

  6. About Sam • Sam is so popular that many people have written books about him. Including, • “Sam Walton, Made in America” • “The 10 Rules of Sam Walton” and • “In Sam we Trust.” • Sam is a person who shows characteristics such as integrity, and leadership, the employees of the time viewed him as a great manager who they learned life lessons from everyday. • Sam is also known for his will to keep going and never give up. People say he would brighten there day every time they saw him.

  7. Wal-Mart in the News • There is a anti Wal-mart website that wants Wal-mart to change there ways, and they update it on a regular basis. It is called www.wakeupwalmart.com • There was a controversy a few years ago regarding the products of Wal-mart not being made in America. There slogan before was “Made in America” and many people got angy and thought that it shouldn’t be there slogan when all of there products really aren't made in America. • To solve this conflict Wal-mart changed its slogan to “Always Low Prices” • A major company like Wal-Mart is constantly in the news.Sam Walton however is not because he has passed away.

  9. Sam Walton’s life now • Sam died on April 5th 1992. • He has carried on a legacy of low prices, and there are now Wal-mart all over the world. • His family still takes part in his business, and some of his family members are still apart of the company.

Philanthropy • On May 15th 2010 Wal-Mart donated $2B to Fight Hunger • On June 4th, 2009 Wal-Mart donated 7.8 Million to Support Summer Feeding Programs and U.S. Food Banks • Wal-Mart and its charitable foundation plan to give $250-million in cash and $1.75-billion worth of food over the next five years to fight hunger in the United States, the company announced • Wal-Mart constantly donates to many charities, this is something they are known for.

Conclusion • I admire Sam Walton because he started a business that today is one of the most profitable companies. • Millions of people all over the world know of Wal-Mart, and no matter where you travel to you are sure to find one located near you. • I admire him because he started something that will be known around the world forever, and all of his employees • People who knew him said he was a wonderful man, and that is a great thing to have.
