  7. Nonfarm Operations? • Referred to as Agribusiness • Agribusiness • Nonfarm work • Two basic areas • Supplies & Services • Marketing & Processing

  8. What are Farming Operations? • Uses land and other resources to grow crops and raise animals • Types: • conventional farming • suburban farming • aquaculture • forestry

  9. Conventional Farming • Large land acreage • Grow typical grains • Corn, soybeans, wheat, and other similar crops • Produce larger numbers of animals • Swine, beef and dairy cattle, and sheep

  10. Suburban Farming • Smaller areas of land • Residential or business locations • Typical products • Vegetable crops and small animals

  11. Aquaculture • “Farming the Water” • Areas: • Raising fish • Tilapia, Bass • Aquatic animals • Shrimp,Crawfish • Aquatic plants • Water cress, water chestnuts

  12. Forestry • Production and use of trees

  13. Other Agriculture Sectors • Ornamental Horticulture • Produce flowers and plants for their beauty • Natural Resources • Working with things found in nature • Soil, water, air

  14. Objective Two Identify Important Historical Developments in Agriculture

  15. Two Important Groups of People That Affected Early Agriculture • Native Americans • Colonists

  16. Native Americans • Early agriculture was: • Hunting and gathering • Indian agriculture: • 7000 B.C. simple farming • 1000 A.D. corn in large plots

  17. Colonists • Learned from Native Americans • Credited with early domestication of animals • The taming, confinement, and breeding of animals for human use

  18. Objective Three Explain major technological developments in agriculture

  19. Technology • Technology - The use of inventions in working & living • Inventions - Any new device or product - A new way of doing work

  20. Technology's Advances • Technology has drastically changed agriculture • Mid 1700s: 90% of people were farmers • Today: 2% of population is involved in production agriculture

  21. History of American Agriculture Farm Machinery and Technology

  27. 20th Century Technological Advances • Computers • Record keeping • Biotechnology • Science to change organisms or their environments • Process to get products from organisms

  28. Review • What is Agriculture? • What is the Agriculture Industry? • What is an example of non-farm operations? • What are the 4 types of farming operations? Provide an example of each. • Who are the 2 groups of people that affected early agriculture? What did they do? • How has technology changed over time in agriculture?
