Leadership’s Engagement to Attack Opiate Abuse John R. Kasich, Governor Orman Hall, Director • Ohio Cabinet Opiate Action Team • MISSION STATEMENT: • The Opiate Action Team attacks the opiate epidemic on behalf of Ohioans to end opiate abuse by reforming prescribing practices for appropriate pain management, punishing those involved in illegal activity, and • treating those who are addicted to enable them to return to productive lives. • 4 Active Workgroups: • Enforcement • Treatment • Professional Education • Public Education • Recovery Supports – soon to be launched
Professional Education • CABINET LEADS: Ted Wymyslo, ODH • & Bonnie Kantor-Burman, ODA • GOAL: • Expand development & use of best practices among healthcare professionals for pain management. • The Governor’s Cabinet Opiate Action Team Professional Education workgroup is a multi-disciplinary collaboration currently working on statewide implementation of Emergency Department guidelines to address drug-seeking behaviors and opiate pain medication prescribing in the ED. Treatment • CABINET LEADS: Orman Hall, ODADAS • & John McCarthy, Medicaid • GOAL: • Increase treatment quality and availability for people in need of opiate addiction treatment, including patient & family support, to reduce opiate addiction and overdose deaths. • The initial focus of this group is the release of a low dose medication-assisted treatment protocol utilizing buprenorphine for opiate addicted clients. Enforcement • CABINET LEADS: Tom Charles, ODPS • & Steve Buehrer, BWC • GOAL: • Increase law enforcement, investigation & prosecutorial efforts regarding Ohio’s opiate epidemic. • Legislation on hidden compartments is near finalization, and it will focus on intent to transport drugs in Ohio. Signs for the #677 campaign are ready to go up. The Highway Patrol statistics for 2011 show that prescription narcotic seizures were up 46%. John R. Kasich, Governor Orman Hall, Director 33 33 33
Public Education • LEADS: Connie Wehrkamp, Governor’s Communications • & Stacey Frohnapfel-Hasson, ODADAS • GOAL: • Escalate public education and advocacy regarding the opiate problem & how to prevent it. • The group will provide a coordinated effort to promote and support campaigns related to opiate painkiller abuse, starting with the new Don’t Get Me Started campaign on 2-1-12.
