  3. Major Daniel Whittle (1840-1901), • “aka El Nathan”: • “The Banner Of The Cross” (1887) • An Army Major during the Civil War later turned evangelist and hymn writer. • Lost his right arm during the war and was “converted” while recovering as a POW. • Used his experiences in the army to convey imagery of the saint’s Spiritual Warfare. • “The Banner of the Cross” was written in 1885 and first published in 1887. • L.O. Sanderson altered the original stanza 4 due to thinking it sounded “premillennial.” Intro Christ wants you for his Heavenly Host, to eternally march beneath the banner of the cross! Beneath The Banner Of The Cross

  4. Js. 4:7: Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Fealty (or pledge of allegiance) is to submit to a person or Ideal; to serve another. • Christ is “the King of kings and Lord of lords!” • (I Tim. 1:17; 6:15) • Phil. 2:10-11: One day “every knee will bow!” • II Cor. 5:10: We will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ! I Tim. 6:15 15. which He will bring about at the proper time--He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, Swear Fealty Why not choose today and serve Him for the reward, rather than swear fealty as a conquered, condemned slave? (II Thess. 1:7-9) Beneath The Banner Of The Cross

  5. Js. 4:7: Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. • To enlist is to obey the gospel! (Gal. 3:26-27) • II Tim. 2:3: It begins with becoming a “good soldier of Christ Jesus.” II Tim. 2:3 3. Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. • A good soldier pleases the One who enlists him! • II Tim. 2:4: Not to become entangled in worldly affairs, but live faithfully! • I Tim. 1:18: “Fight the good fight!” (II Tim. 4:7: As Paul had done!) • I Jn. 2:15-17: The one that does the will of the Father lives forever! Swear Fealty II Tim. 2:4 4. No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. Serving Christ for life (Rev. 2:10) begins with obeying the gospel (swearing fealty)! Beneath The Banner Of The Cross

  6. Eph. 5:1: Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; • Christ is the Master Swordsman we are to imitate! • Mt. 4:1-11: Christ used the word of God expertly to deftly turn Satan away (4:4, 7, 10). To do what Christ did requires knowledge of God’s word and being ready when the moment comes! II Tim. 2:15 15. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. • Study to be approved! • (II Tim. 2:15: KJV – “study”) • Eph. 6:10-13: Armor of God given to fully equip the soldier of Christ to stand firm! • II Tim. 4:2: “Be ready in season and out of season…” • II Pet. 3:18: “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord.” (Acts 17:11: Study “daily”) Practice Beneath The Banner Of The Cross

  7. Eph. 5:1: Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; • Practice to resist Satan! • Heb. 5:14: Those who grow into maturity are those who by “practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.” • Js. 4:7: Submit to God (swear fealty) and resist the devil for he will flee from you! • I Pet. 5:9: Knowing Satan is our adversary (5:8), we can resist him “firm in [our] faith.” Heb. 5:14 14. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. Practice Soldiers of the Cross need to know the word of God and be able to use it to teach! Beneath The Banner Of The Cross

  8. Mt. 26:53: "Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” • Christ is not only the King, but the Captain of the Lord’s • host! (Josh. 5:14-15) • Mt. 26:53: He had more than 12 Legions of angels at his command! • Rev. 19:11-16: He is the King on the white horse at the head of His heavenly host! (Jn. 1:1, 14: Christ is the Word; I Tim. 6:15: He is King of kings) Christ is the “Captain of their salvation” (Heb. 2:9-10) Josh. 5:14-15 Jos 5:14-15 14. He said, "No; rather I indeed come now as captain of the host of the LORD." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, "What has my lord to say to his servant?" 15. The captain of the LORD'S host said to Joshua, "Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so. Battle! Beneath The Banner Of The Cross

  9. Mt. 26:53: "Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” • Use weapons of spiritual warfare accurately! • (II Tim. 2:15; Heb. 5:14) • Shield of Faith – Eph. 6:16 • I Jn. 5:4 Eph. 6:16 16. in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. • Helmet of Salvation – Eph. 6:17 • Eph. 2:8-9 Eph. 6:17 17. And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. • Sword of the Spirit – Eph. 6:17 • Heb. 4:12 Battle! Beneath The Banner Of The Cross

  10. Mt. 26:53: "Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” • Never shrink back! • II Tim. 2:3: “Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” • Heb. 10:35-39: “We are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.” (Lk. 9:62) • Eph. 3:8-10; 6:12: Our fight is not physical, but spiritual, and the church demonstrates the “manifold wisdom of God!” Heb. 10:35-39 35. Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. 37. FOR YET IN A VERY LITTLE WHILE, HE WHO IS COMING WILL COME, AND WILL NOT DELAY. 38. BUT MY RIGHTEOUS ONE SHALL LIVE BY FAITH; AND IF HE SHRINKS BACK, MY SOUL HAS NO PLEASURE IN HIM. 39. But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul. Battle! Saints are to be prepared for battle & “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might!” Beneath The Banner Of The Cross

  11. As in a physical army, saints come from all different backgrounds (Eph. 2; 3:4-7) but stand together united in one mind and one purpose (I Cor. 1:10)! • We will give an account to God whether or not we • “enlisted” in His army! (II Cor. 5:10) • We must submit to God (Js. 4:7) in obedience to the gospel • (Gal. 3:27; II Tim. 2:3). • We must practice with our weapons of spiritual warfare to be approved • (II Tim. 2:15). • We must “stand firm” and "earnestly contend for the faith" • (Eph. 6:13; Jude 3) Conclusion Paul was able to comfort Timothy saying he had fought the fight, he had finished the course (II Tim. 4:6-8) Beneath The Banner Of The Cross

  12. As soldiers of Christ we march beneath the banner of the cross! One day we will lay our armor by, and enter into an eternal rest for the soul! (Rev. 21:1-7) Till that time, as soldiers of the cross, “We are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul!” (Heb. 10:39) Conclusion Beneath The Banner Of The Cross
