  2. Veggie Garden Purpose • Teach plant growth from seed planting to harvest.

  3. Butterfly Garden Purpose • Teach the life cycle of the butterfly by growing both nectar and food plants utilizing the cylinder gardening model.

  4. Benefits • Pride • Responsibility • Determination • Vegetable gardening results in improved nutrition

  5. Why it’s Better! • Easy! • No soil preparation • Less labor • Less space • No experience necessary

  6. How it’s Done • Bottomless cylinders are used as small, individual gardens.

  7. Garden Set-Up • Clear area of weeds & grass • Arrange in rows • Arrange 18” apart

  8. Cylinder Set-up • Place on newspaper or bags • Weed-barrier • Borders & Mulch

  9. Soilless Mix • Cylinders are filled with peat moss and Perlite potting soil mix.

  10. Cylinder Setup • Mix in 3 tbs of organic fertilizer is mixed in. • Seed are planted • (depth = seed diameter) • Water

  11. Cylinder Care • 2 students share the responsibilities of caring for each cylinder • Watering – every day for 1st week • Thinning • Very Minor Weeding • Harvesting
