Introduction • Why do managers need to understand and participate in IS decisions? • Today, every company is a technology company • IS must be managed as a resource • IS enable change in the way people work together • IS are part of almost every aspect of business • IS enable business opportunities and new strategies • IS can be used to combat business challenges from competitors

Disruptive Technologies: • Digitization - electronic products & services • can increase reach • Mobile devices - ubiquitous computing • World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) – standards for easier access via mobile devices • Web 2.0 - 2G of web communities & hosted services for collaboration • increasing social & political impact • “Semantic" web - meaning of content labeled for integration • Extensible Markup Language (XML) describes concepts, terms, & relationships

  3. Steve Wozniak • Asked if he had expected computing would be anything like it is today, Woz answered, • “Barely. Barely. • Did we expect the Internet? No. We knew that there would be data sent between computers, maybe some kind of posting to bulletin boards. • Music? No. • Videos? No. • Did we expect digital cameras? No. • There were a lot of things unknown that people could do- we hoped we were giving them a universal platform, a tool to implement.”

  5. What will the new corporation look like? • The new model • will have to be more like the marketplace, and less like corporations of the past. • will need to be flexible, agile, able to quickly adjust to market developments, and ruthless in reallocating resources to new opportunities.

Motivate and inspire workers • Instill in workers drive, creativity, & innovative spirit more commonly found among entrepreneurs • Information gathering needs to be broader & more inclusive • New mechanisms for harnessing "wisdom of crowds" • Feedback loops to foster: • Change, • innovation, • adaptability.
