  1. Welcome to Worship atMarket Harborough Baptist Church This presentation was shown along with the sermon on 14 April 2013.

  2. Acts 1 v 1 – 8 TNIV 1In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

  3. 4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." 6So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

  4. 7He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

  5. Church Vision Statement • We are a churchthat takes Christ to all the community through its vibrant worship and Bible teaching, its welcome, its care and its service.

  6. Church Sizes

  7. What’s Happened to Us?

  8. What does the “Pastoral” to “Program” change entail? Pastoral Program • Organism • Relationship focus is on the ‘pastor’ • Everyone knows everyone • Sunday church is the main event • We intuitively know who we are – we don’t need to think about it • Organisation • Relationship focus is on a ‘group’ in the church • No-one can know everyone • Sunday church is a main event alongside others • We discern who God wants us to be and construct our identity deliberately

  9. Is it going to be worth it? • The culture change from person oriented to group oriented is really hard to do • The change from ‘organism’ to ‘organisation’ is really hard to do. • Doing both together is extremely difficult. Alice Mann’s advice? If your congregation has a weak sense of calling to reach out beyond its current circle of members, attention to the [other] barriers … will probably not result in a breakthrough to the next size.

  10. Reasons why we feel called to grow • Lots of visitors to Sunday worship • Increased Sunday morning attendance • Developing vision for evangelism & outreach • Developing vision for buildings • Increasing population in the town • Our church situation matching the church growth theory • In February 2011, we said yes to wanting to grow the church, and we adopted new structures to make that possible.
