Age Immaterial Some questions to consider: • Who do we mean by “older women”? • How are the issues faced by “older women” different to those faced by younger women? • Or indeed by “older men”?
Older women and work • More women over 50 in employment (nearly 4m) • UK 5th highest employment rate for women over 50 in EU • Highest concentration of women aged 50-64 in Admin and secretarial roles (23%), Professional roles (20%), and Caring (15%).
Women over 50 in the workplace: some issues identified by union members • Redundancies • Low pay • Age sex discrimination • Juggling care and work responsibilities • Age/gender related health issues
Age and sex discrimination • Multiple discrimination faced by older women - particularly older BME women and older disabled women – as a factor in job losses amongst this group. • Older women being “managed out” on competency/health grounds. • Difficulty getting back into the labour market for women over 50 who lose their jobs.
Caring • A fifth of women between 45 and 54 are grandmothers, while half of women between 55 to 59 (below SPA) are grandmothers • 9.1 per cent of over 50s have taken care of someone in the past week – largely partner or elderly parent • The majority of informal care is provided by retired grandmothers between 55 and 64 but increasingly older women are staying in work for longer so this is set to change. • Cost of formal childcare also likely to impact on working grandmothers
Pay • Women in their 50s earn nearly a fifth less than men of the same age – the widest gender pay gap of any age group • A woman in her 50s working f/t currently earns £11.99 per hour– 18% less hour than a man of a similar age (£14.69). • Women in their 50s also earn less than women in their 30s (£14.17) and 40s (£12.93). • The majority of women over 50 in part-time work earn less than £10,000 a year.
Older women and services • Coventry Women’s Voices report found that – contrary to media portrayals of older women “getting off lightly” – this group are doing very badly from cuts. • In particular, cuts to health services, transport, and social care affecting older women.
