  1. The Future of Ocean Innovation

  2. . Why are we here? Using Makai software to reduce risk & cost of subsea cable installation process • Outline • Who are we? • Subsea cable experience • Typical cable installation problems • Makai products and solutions

  3. Who is Makai? • Founded 1973, Located in Hawaii • Innovative Technology Company: • Ocean Renewable Energy • Submarine Cable Software • Visualization Software • Ocean Engineering/R&D Ocean Renewable Energy Submarine Cable Software Visualization Software Ocean Engineering / R&D

  4. Intro Movie Clip

  5. Submarine Cable Experience • 27 years of experience on submarine cables • Over 400,000 km of cable installed • 75% of telecom installation ships have Makai Lay • 95% of the telecom subsea cable route planning is done with MakaiPlan

  6. Cable Control Software Standard • Installed in 32 vessels • SubCom • Alcatel • Global Marine Systems Ltd. • Elettra • NTT-WEM • Mitsubishi • AseanCableship Ltd. • FairfieldNodal • International Telcom Group • Dockwise • Solstad • SAIC • L3-MariPro • U.S. Navy

  7. Cable Installation Phases • Reducing risk requires: • Thorough route planning • Proper installation planning & operator training • Correct response to changing at-sea events

  8. Makai Products Installation Planning & Operator Training At-sea Installation Monitoring and Control Route Planning

  9. How do we know it works? Performance Calibration • Calibration and Testing is only viable proof • Makai’s software extensively tested and calibrated • US Department of Energy At-Sea Tests • US Navy At-Sea Arrays • Commercial applications and success (over 400,000 km of cable installed)

  10. Precision Calibration

  11. Conclusions Open ocean deployment operations will never be free of risks. Unplanned events such as equipment failures, human errors and rapidly changing weather and sea conditions are difficult to predict and avoid. The best protection from failure is thorough pre-planning and use of the best at-sea tools and equipment available. Real-time deployment control systems provides the cable owner, insurer, and the installer with the peace of mind that the installer has the capacity to deal with these at-sea risks and prevent costly mistakes which ultimately affect the reputation and bottom line of everyone involved.
