Monday Maths Workshops Started in Christchurch by Ross Atkins with the support of NZMOC and CMA Sessions run every month For students who enjoy Maths, need a challenge, want to meet like minded students Briefly had a centre running in Wellington Two centres in Auckland – Central (UoA) and East (Macleans)

  4. Monday Maths Workshops Monthly sessions in Canterbury 1. Monday Maths • Problems shared fortnight before session • Students work on them individually, with friends, with teachers • Session is a chance for students to share what they found • Ross facilitates session but only occasionally gives his own solutions September Problems

Masterclass • More of a lecture weaved with solving problems • Students work on them at the session, individually or in groups • Lots of sharing of ideas still happens • Ross facilitates session and shares his expertise Masterclass Handout

  6. Monday Maths Workshops What can you do? • Spread the word – share problems with your students • Facilitate a group – we would love to see more centres running around the rest of NZ. Ross able to help set up and provide continual support • Problems – Ross writes them but wants to include areas that students and teacher are interested in (outside NZC) • Join the mailing list, get students to join – more info here

  7. New Zealand Maths Olympiad The first NZMO was held in 2019 and just concluded! Run over two rounds Round 1: Open to all students enrolled in a NZ High School or Intermediate Students download problems and attempt them (themselves) and send in to be marked Top students invited to participate in ….

  8. New Zealand Maths Olympiad The first NZMO was held in 2019 and just concluded! Run over two rounds Round 2: Students sit a three hour paper with only five questions Approximately 60 – 80 students only are invited Gold, Silver, Bronze awards Honourable Mentions awards

  9. New Zealand Maths Olympiad The first NZMO was held in 2019 and just concluded! The results from this will help determine students that are invited to the Residential Maths Camp held in January every year. The Camp is used to further these students knowledge in Maths broader than the NZC and is used to select the team for the International Mathematics Olympiad

New Zealand Maths Olympiad What can you do? • Spread the word – share the Round one problems with your students and encourage them to have a go • Enter students – even if students have not made a lot of progress with problems, encourage them to send them in. Partial progress counts for a lot in these competitions • Encourage them to go to a Monday Maths session

  12. IMO The toughest mathematical competition in the world for students who are not enrolled in a University and are under age 19

  13. NZMOC Residential Camp The top 24 – 28 students across New Zealand are invited to participate in this camp in Auckland every January. The students: • attend lectures by prominent NZ mathematicians • participate in problem solving sessions • socialise during quizzes, excursions, organized activities

  17. NZMOC Squad Training After the 4.5 hour exam, 12 students are selected to continue their training as a squad. Each student will have a mentor assigned to them and they will also do three further assignments and sit the AMO, the APMO and the BMO Six students will then be selected to represent New Zealand at the IMO in July

  18. The IMO The team is made up of six students, two leaders and a manager. The leaders are in charge of the Maths side of things The manager is a high school teacher and manages the organisation around getting the team to the competition, and also the day to day at the competition.

  19. IMO Questions Each year over 100 countries are represented by 1 to 6 students. The competition: • Over two days • 4.5 hours each day • 3 questions each day • 7 points per question • Mode score of 0 • 49 languages (in 2019)

  28. New Zealand Maths Olympiad What can you do? • Spread the word – share the Round one problems with your students and encourage them to have a go. Talk to other teachers/schools about the program • Volunteer – spend some time in January at the camp, see the students in their element • Be the team manager – travel to another country with the team, experience another culture, all at no cost to you
