  7. 14th September World First Aid Day • The theme for 2013 is First Aid and Road Safety see information pack • The British Red Cross has also produced a first aid education kit for UK schools and youth organisations entitled Life.   12. 1st October International Day of Older Persons • Celebrating the major contributions older people give to society, this day is about raising awareness of the impact of an ageing population and the need to ensure people can grow old with dignity. • An excellent slideshow to prompt discussion can be found here or see UN website

  14. 4th October World Animal Day • Set up in 1931 as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. Since then it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and is widely celebrated in countries throughout the world. • Resources

  15. 4th-10th October World Space week World Space Week 2013: "Exploring Mars, Discovering Earth" is all about what many consider the Next Frontier- the planet Mars • If you plan to organize an event between 4 and 10 October register your 2013 event directly, or you can contact your National Coordinator to see what you can do in your country.

  16. 7th – 13th October Children’s Book Week • An annual celebration of reading for pleasure for children of primary school age.  Booktrust Children's Books Week website has links to lots of useful resources, ideas and activities. November 11th Armistice Day • Armistice Day, also known as Poppy Day or Remembrance Day, commemorates the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since World War 1. Royal British Legion's learning pack includes lesson ideas for KS2-4 on the themes of conflict, remembrance and the importance of peace and can be downloaded for free.

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery – 2nd December • Artefacts box to loan: The Slave trade is perhaps the biggest human tragedy that affected the highest number of people for the longest span of time in history. Resources exploring the issues are available suitable for KS2 ,3 and 4. The Adventures of Ottobah and Teachers Handbook which contains curriculum guidance and lesson plans for KS2 and KS3 (meeting KS3 History Curriculum).
