Aims of the Presentation Update on the development of the Incredible Years programmes in Powys, with particular focus on: • The development of Home Coaching for the IY Parent Programme • Piloting new protocols for delivering TCM in twilight sessions • Peer coaching to support the development of Classroom Dina

  3. Reinforcing the Incredible Years Message School – Foundation Phase 1:1 services in the home CHILD Childcare Parents

  4. Parenting Support offered 1:1 in the home by; • Early Intervention Service Staff • Health visitors • Social Workers Incredible Years Programmes in schools co-ordinated by Community Advisory Teachers delivered by teaching staff, Education Psychologists Childcare Staff (initially in Flying Start areas) trained to model Incredible Years practice. Parent Programmes co-ordinated by Barnardos and delivered by a range of staff from different agencies incl teachers

  5. Overview of IY Programmes in Powys Supportive infra- structure Parenting: a mentor two peer coaches Seven accredited leaders + three submitting for accreditation

  6. Overview of IY Programmes in Powys Supportive infra- structure Teacher Programme: a mentor several staff working towards accreditation Classroom Dina: a mentor a peer coach Regular, in county training and supervision in all programmes

  7. Who supports and coordinates? Incredible Years Operational Group: multi- agency meets quarterly CYPP embedded PARENTING: Barnardo’s- expert central coordination, multi agency delivery TEACHER and DINA: Community Advisory Teachers Foundation Phase Advisory Teachers schools CLINICAL LEAD

Home visiting coaching For parents who need additional support whilst attending groups For parents who find group services hard to reach ; Parents with complex needs Parents with learning difficulties or parent with mental health issues Follow on support for parents where progress has been limited

IY home visiting coaching for parents who are unable to attend groups: • Based on pre-school Basic Programme • Minimum of 10 home visits • Allow I hour min for each visit • Adding more sessions for parents who need it • Tailoring topic and selecting vignettes to ‘make the shoe fit’ for parents • Structure similar to groups with vignettes, role play and collaborative approach • Materials needed for home visits (TV, DVD, Toys, IY book, parent handouts) • Coach resources: Coaches Guidelines, IY DVDs, Self study handouts for Parents

Coaches providing additional support for parents already attending groups • Minimum of four home visits at 2/3 week intervals Choose one topic from each main area – : • Social and emotional regulation • Using praise and Incentives • Rules, routines and limit setting • Handling misbehaviour • One visit to review each of the four main topics

Piloted training in Powys x 3 One day training, for those who have already attended three day Basic Materials available to purchase Home Coaching delivered by AFC and FAB, social work assistants, health visitors Review of home coaching underway Most frequently used to deliver bottom of the pyramid, focus on play, special time and emotional, social coaching Supporting parents to attend a group following initial home coaching Home coaching to support parents already attending a group- supporting more positive outcomes

Incredible Years Teacher Programme Content Building positive relationships with students • Building parent-teacher collaborations • Increasing parent involvement • Importance of teacher attention, encouragement and praise • Preventing problems: proactive teaching • Decreasing inappropriate behavior • Promoting positive social skills, emotional literacy, & problem solving in the classroom

Models of delivery: To groups of teachers from schools within a locality To focused groups - NQTs To groups of teachers in a single targeted school, with delivery by trainers outside the school By head teachers or senior teachers in their own schools Protocols: -delivered over 5/6 full days, over a number of months -delivered over 15-18, 2 hour s ‘twilight sessions’ weekly or fortnightly

Advantage of Teacher Classroom Management Twilight protocols: Schools can be self sufficient in terms of delivery School staff can train their own colleagues and develop consistent ‘whole school’ approaches No additional cost for teacher cover time Can form part of school development plans *Twilight protocols currently being piloted and should be available Easter 2012
