  1. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF INTRODUCTION Welcome to your INT2 / HIGHER Design Unit. In order to start preparing your design portfolio, you first need to create a design brief that you will work to for the duration of the course. In order to maximise YOUR choice of design brief, we have divided your design option choices into TWO sections: THEMES and FINAL OUTCOMES. In order to create your design brief, you will need to select ONE THEME from a choice of three. Once you have chosen your theme, you will need to select ONE FINAL OUTCOME route to follow. Each final outcome route (Jewellery, Textiles or Product Design) has three possible final outcome products for you to design and produce. You will need to select just ONE of these.

  2. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF INTRODUCTION • So, to recap… • Choose ONE of the three THEMES that follow, then… • Choose ONE of the three FINAL OUTCOME routes… • and select ONE of the ‘products’ from your FINAL OUTCOME route.

  3. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF 1) CHOOSE YOUR THEME To start with, please select ONE of the following three themes…

  4. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF THEME 1 “MACROCOSMIC” Up until the invention of the magnifying lens and the microscope, the miniature worlds of the micro universes around (and even within) us were a complete mystery. Now, the world of the ‘micro’ is unfolding rapidly before our eyes and the intricate beauty of cells, viruses, microscopic creatures and the like is becoming more apparent. Many designers have begun using this ‘alien’ world of the microscopic as inspiration for a vast variety of products, turning the ‘Micro’ (the small) into the ‘Macro’ (large) and producing awe-inspiring pieces that, simply by changing the scale of objects, are creating a whole new field of design and style all around us. In your design unit, whichever final outcome you choose to design and create, you are asked to select a range of microscopic images, examine their unique forms, colours, patterns and textures and create work based on this.

  5. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF THEME 2 “TRIBE” Every Culture and society in the world, whether it is considered ‘advanced’ or ‘primitive’, modern or historical, has its ‘Tribes’. These tribes have their own individual styles with unique combinations of pattern, colour, texture and motif. Whether these tribes are larger like whole countries (The Aztecs or Ancient Egyptians) or smaller, like fashion and music ‘tribes’ (Punks, Goths, New Romantics) each has a unique ‘look’ and set of visual ‘rules’ that can be associated with them. In your design unit, whichever final outcome you choose to design and create, you are asked to select a ‘tribe’, examine its unique style ‘rules’ and create work based on this.

  6. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF THEME 3 “ARCHITEXTURES” Throughout history there have been as many different styles, movements and fashions in architecture as in any other art form. Think about all the differing styles of architecture – both modern and historical – that surround us in our daily lives. Even though such buildings can be impressive in their own right, the details of doorways, arches, windows, carvings, metalwork and so on can be just as fascinating – if not more so when they are seen close up and seen in their own right rather than simply being part of a larger structure. In your design unit, whichever final outcome you choose to design and create, you are asked to select a variety of differing architectural shapes, forms, patterns and textures and create work based on a combination of these.

  7. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF 2) CHOOSE YOUR FINAL OUTCOME You will now be presented with three FINAL OUTCOME routes. Please select ONE of the routes (Jewellery, Textiles or Product Design) and also ONE final ‘product’ to design and create from your chosen route. For example, you might choose: JEWELLERY as your Final Outcome route and NECKPIECE as your chosen product from Jewellery. Please make your choices from the following…

  8. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF FINAL OUTCOME OPTION 1 : JEWELLERY If you choose Jewellery as your Final Outcome route, you will be asked to design and create ONE of the following pieces based upon the theme that you having chosen. You are encouraged to avoid ‘safe’ and familiar options and explore the wider possibilities for your final outcome: NECKPIECE – This option refers not only to necklaces but any type of jewellery worn around the neck, so you may wish to explore more ‘avant garde’ sculptural pieces inspired by the unique forms and structures seen on the catwalk. ARMPIECE – As with the neckpiece option, an armpiece can refer to any form or structure worn on or around the arm and hand. Apart from braclets and bangles, you may wish to explore ideas such as upper arm bands, gauntlets and the like. BROOCH – Just as with the neckpiece and armpiece options, you are not limited to creating a simple, traditional brooch. Explore forms, shapes, structures and textures that can be worn on or around the chest. With all three options, you should consider the shapes, forms, textures and structures of your chosen theme first and then work from these to create your final piece rather than working from traditional necklace, braclet or hat shapes and making your design fit these.

  9. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF FINAL OUTCOME OPTION 2 : TEXTILES If you choose Textiles as your Final Outcome route, you will be asked to design and create ONE of the following fashion accessories based upon the theme that you having chosen (Please keep in mind the fact that this option does NOT involve the creation of entire outfits): BELT – Whilst functional, belts come in a vast array of sizes, shapes, colours, textures and patterns. Your task is to look at what the possibilities for belt design can be and mix this with your chosen visual theme. BAG – As with belts, bags are as diverse as the people who buy them. Your task is to look at what the possibilities for bag design can be and mix this with your chosen visual theme. You should attempt to not just ‘customise’ an existing bag but to create an entirely new shape and form for your bag as well. HEAD PIECE– Whilst functional item, hats, fascinators, visors and so on come in a vast array of sizes, shapes, colours, textures and patterns. Your task is to look at what the possibilities for headpiece design can be and mix this with your chosen visual theme.

  10. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF FINAL OUTCOME OPTION 3 : PRODUCT DESIGN If you choose Product Design as your Final Outcome route, you will be asked to design and create ONE of the following based upon the theme that you have chosen: VESSEL – ‘Vessel’ is the name that we give to any object whose main purpose is to contain something. For example, vases, bowls, cups, plates, jugs, etc. If you choose this option, you will need to design and create a vessel that is based upon your chosen theme. LAMP – Lamps are easily recognisable items, but think about the diverse range of shapes, colours and forms that you see in lighting. Your task will be to design and create a functioning lamp based upon your chosen theme. CLOCK – As with lamps, clocks come in a vast array of styles, shapes and forms. You will need to design and create a imaginative and unique design based upon your chosen theme.

  11. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF CREATING YOUR DESIGN BRIEF Now that you have selected your THEME, FINALOUTCOME and PRODUCT, you will need to know who you are designing for…

  12. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF JEWELLERY & TEXTILES CLIENT :TOPSHOP / TOPMAN If you have selected either JEWELLERY or TEXTILES as your final outcome route, then you are designing for TOPSHOP / TOPMAN TOPSHOP is a chain of clothing stores that operates in more than 20 countries. Its primary sales come from a range of products including clothing and fashion accessories, and is mainly known for its women's clothing, with TOPMAN having been created in the late 1970s to cater for male customers. In the 1990s, Topshop was considered to be deeply unfashionable; however, the chain has reinvented itself as a fashionable brand in recent years. This reinvention has included the introduction of a 'Unique' line of clothes, a more upmarket selection of fashion, and a regular show at London Fashion Week, the only high street brand to do so.

  13. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF PRODUCT DESIGN CLIENT :HABITAT If you have selected PRODUCT DESIGN as your final outcome route, then you are designing for HABITAT Habitat is a retailer of household furnishings in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, and has franchised outlets in other countries. Terence Conran founded the company in London in 1964, opening his own store to market his Summa range of furniture. In October 2009, Habitat employed 1,574 people and operated in 71 stores. Habitat is seen by many as the ‘father’ of IKEA as its aim when it was established was to bring good design to the masses at a reasonable price. Habitat and its founder Terence Conran have been credited with developing the British public’s interest and taste in interior design over the last 40 years.

  14. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF CREATING YOUR DESIGN BRIEF You now have all of the information that you require to write up your design brief. For example, if you have chosen the theme ‘Macrocosmic’ and are planning to design a ‘Lamp’ from the ‘Product Design’ route, then your brief might be as follows: DESIGN BRIEF : ‘MACROCOSMIC’ LAMP FOR HABITAT “I have been commissioned by the Habitat furniture store to design and create a lamp that will go on sale in its stores across the UK and abroad. My lamp will be based around my exploration of the microscopic world of cells, viruses, bacteria and the like. My final lamp must appeal to Habitat customers, be practical, durable, functional and safe, and must be completed by a specific deadline.”

  15. S5/S6 INT2 / HIGHER DESIGN UNIT BRIEF CREATING YOUR DESIGN BRIEF You should now be able to type up your completed Design Brief and start working towards the creation of your final piece. Good Luck with your Design work!!
