Performance poetry: intended to be listened to/watched, rather than read silently • Mainly a movement among young poets: anti-academic (“here’s what I don’t agree with”) but a solution (“here’s what we can do”) • Subject matter is often highly politicized: racial, economic, and gender injustices as well as current events • Poetry competition, judged on content as well as style of performance • Growing culture: ranging from unofficial gatherings to international competitions
