  1. EOCT Practice Question of the Day

  2. CCGPS Geometry UNIT QUESTION: How are real life scenarios represented by quadratic functions? Today’s Question: How do we graph quadratics in standard form? Standard: MCC9-12.F.IF.8

  3. Coefficients a, b, and c are coefficients Examples: Find a, b, and c

  4. Open Up / Open Down

  5. Example #1 A > 0 Therefore, the parabola opens up

  6. Example #2 A < 0 Therefore, the parabola opens down

  7. Examples: Determine if the Parabola Opens Up or Opens Down

  8. Axis of SymmetryVertex Point • Axis of symmetry is found using • To find the y coordinate of the vertex • point, substitute x into the equation • and solve for y.

  9. Examples Find the vertex point

  10. Graphing Quadratic Equations in Standard Form

  11. 1. Put the equation in standard form: 3. Find the axis of symmetry: (vertical line) Notes-Graphing Quadratic Equations 3.1 Steps to graph quadratic equations 2. Identify the values of a, b, and c.

  12. Steps to graph quadratic equations (cont.) 4. Find your vertex (substitute your axis of symmetry back into the original equation and solve for y). 5. Construct a table of values for x and y. Choose values of x, two above and two below your vertex. 6. Plot the points and connect them with a U-shaped curve.

  13. If a is positive, then the parabola will open up. If a is negative, then the parabola will open down. Graph opens up or opens down?

  14. OPENS DOWN a = -1 b = 2 c = -1 

  15. Tell whether the graph opens up or down. Graph each using a T-chart. Find the axis of symmetry &  vertex . Use a dotted line to graph the axis of symmetry. OPENS UP a = 1 b = -6 c = 5 

  16. OPENS DOWN a = -1 b = -2 c = 3 

  17. OPENS DOWN a = 1 b = 2 c = -6 

  18. OPENS UP a = 1 b = 8 c = 13 

  19. OPENS UP a = -1 b = 2 c = 0 
