The Commonwealth Association of Polytechnics in Africa (CAPA) • A Pan-African organization formed following a recommendation of the 7th Commonwealth Conference of Education Ministers held in March 1977 in Accra, Ghana • Mandate • Promote policy advocacy in favour of TVET • Support professional and skills development in TVET • Support Development and Transfer of technology • Support Institutional (TVET) capacity building CAPA

Vision of CAPA A focal point and resource outfit for the promotion of TVET in Africa Mission • To provide a dynamic forum for: • gathering, testing and sharing of innovative ideas in TVET through conferences, workshops and publications; • promotion of partnerships and capacity building initiatives; and • policy analysis and advocacy in favour of skills development for wealth creation.   5. Membership Over 180 post-secondary educational institutions (technical colleges, polytechnics and technical universities) across 18 African Commonwealth African countries clustered in three regions CAPA

Aims & Objectives of CAPA • To stimulate exchanges of experiences and ideas by providing a forum for discussion of matters of common interest • To support improvement of curriculum relevance and delivery methods in consultation with governments and industries • To disseminate information and publications about matters of interest to member institutions CAPA

Aims & Objectives of CAPA (2) • To facilitate the movement of students and trainers between member institutions and between countries • To study needs associated with development and transfer of technology • To facilitate collaboration by member institutions to advance their common educational interests. CAPA

  9. Strength (1) • High rate of participation in CAPA Conferences • An average of 150 participants from member institutions in at least 75 percent of member countries H.E. Rhoda Peace Tumusiime, the AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture receiving CAPA Award of Excellence in Development on behalf of the AUC Chairperson, H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, receiving from Ugandan Minister of Education, Major (Rtd.) Jessica Alupo. Dr. Alison Richardson (Education Specialist, COL) and Mr. Bashir Mursal (Director of TVET, Kenya Min. of Education) at the CAPA Entebbe conference

Challenges of TVET Institutions in Africa • Need to raise visibility and niche in the training market • need to target students who desire short, modular and market-driven courses for immediate employment • Need to de-emphasize certification in favour of developing competencies and proficiency testing of learners • Need to recognise of prior learning • Need to build leadership capacity CAPA
