  1. Subject – Verb Agreement

  2. Subject • The subject of the sentence is who or what the sentence is about. The boy watches the movie. EXAMPLE: Subject – The sentence is about the boy.

  3. Verb • Verbs are action words (throw) or state of being words (is). The verb must agree with its subject in number. The boy watches the movie. EXAMPLE: Verb – watches is singular. Subject – the sentence is about the boy. Boy is singular.

  5. Subjects joined by and take a plural verb • Plants, flowers, andsoilwere interesting to George Washington Carver. • Rain and sleetwere expected to fall Saturday night.

  6. A compound subject that names only one person or thing takes a singular verb. • A famous professor and scientist at Tuskegee Institute was George Washington Carver. • The inventor and patriotwas one of America’s most influential men.

  7. Singular subjects joined by or or nor take a singular verb. • Neither his mother nor his fatherwas alive to raise George. When a singular subject and a plural subject are joined by or or nor, the verb agrees with the subject nearer the verb. • Neither his mother nor his brotherswere alive to raise George.

  8. A collective noun takes a singular verb when the noun refers to the group as a unit. • The committeeis in charge of the reception. A collective noun takes a plural verb when the noun refers to the individual parts or members of the group. • The committeehave been unable to decide where to hold the event.

  9. Practice: Re-write each sentence using the correct verb.
