  3. Building Blocks • Monomer : A subunit or small molecule made up of one or more atoms. Mono= one • Polymer: A large molecule made up of many monomers bonded together. A polymer is also known as a Macromolecule. Poly=many

  5. Polymer: Carbohydrates • Function: Provides usable energy for cells • Made up of: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen • Monomer: Glucose/Simple Sugars • Examples/Where its found: Plants: (Complex sugars/starches, cellulose) glycogen, Animals: (glycogen )

  6. Polymer: Lipids • Provides: stored energy that can later be used • Made up of: mostly carbon and hydrogen with small amounts of oxygen • Monomer: Fatty Acids • Examples/Found: Fats, oils, and cholesterols derived from animals and plants

  7. Polymer: Protein • Made up of: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sometimes sulfur • Monomer: Amino Acids • Examples/Found: hair, nails, muscle, hemoglobin (in blood). In most organisms with many functions.

  8. Polymer: Nucleic Acids • Function: Provides Genetic code • Made up of: carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and phosphorus • Monomer: Nucleotides (sugar, phosphate, and base) • Examples/Found: DNA and RNA. DNA is in the cells of all organisms
